CBS cancelled a lot of shows during that period. They were looking for a younger audience and cancelled some long time running, and still popular, shows like Jackie Gleason, Sullivan, Red Skelton, Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres, Hee Haw, and Petticoat Junction. It was called the rural purge. While it was sad to see these popular favorites be dumped all at once, it did make room for some future classics like All in The Family and MASH.
Also, I believe Ed Sullivan was steadily declining with dementia, and he passed away a year or so later.
I wonder if his famous “Here they are….the girls” was the beginning signs of that terrible disease
