"Nightflight" Tue Sept 23, 9P-12M ET: More Motown Covers??? You Bet!

Howdy there Folks! Welcome to Autumn...my favorite season! Sadly...on Cape Cod, this supposedly 3 month season lasts about 3 weeks. But back to the subject at hand....Motown Covers! Last week, I aired a slew of Motown songs recorded by non-Motown artists. I had missed a few...so after the show was done and in the past week, I did a little research and found a whole lot more...another show's worth some great redoes by some of your favorite artist...one more time! So join me tonight for this and a whole lot more....on "Nightflight"...on WOMR 92.1 FM Provincetown and WFMR 91.3 FM Orleans and streaming at www.womr.org Thanks so much! See you on the radio! John

I'm excited to discover what surprises you have in store for us this evening, John!

I expect you'll be playing a cover of "Do You Love Me". The British hit versions by the Dave Clark 5 and by Brian Poole & the Tremeloes were both rubbish. At least the version by Mersey group Faron's Flamingos was fairly competent.

As Diana says during your favorite Farewell track, Aquarius/ Let The Sunshine In, John.... "One more time!"

Looking forward to getting under the Motown Covers tonight with you and the gang. I'll be back at nine to provide turndown service and mints to anyone who needs it.... [[smile)

Martin....actually I didn't even think of "DYLM"...not really one of my favorite songs. But when you mentioned it, I had to listen to those rubbish versions....you are so right. Of course I knew DC5's version....not bad to me...but not special. But then.....I found the best of them all...and it was right in front of me...well, behind me in the Midnight Johnny archives. So now that I've teased you....I must play it. Great to have you listening....as always!

Glen...yes....that "Aquarius/Let The Sun Shine In" track....I think Mary's mike was turned up higher than Diana's! A pleasure to share my Motown covers with you! Just be glad I'm not sharing a recent cover of B.E.F. featuring Sandi Shaw singing "Just Walk In My Shoes"....her vocal makes the Lewis Sisters' voices sound like nightingales !

Yes, that Sandie Shaw track should only be used during pledge drives as a threat to play endlessly until WOMR meets its goal....

    Howdeeee from the still-United Kingdom!

I was listening on youtube during the week to some Motown covers by Bobby Vee, and I was surprised by how terrible they were.

I like The Carpenters Beechwood cover for the fun it is but that video they shot for it is so Cheesy it should come with its own box of crackers to serve it on..

Excellent version of "Didn't You Know" by the wonderful Maxine Brown. I bet not many people remember her appearance at Billy Walker's Uppercut club in London in the 60s. Great memories.

John, top flight radio show as always. I like Sharon Redd's version of Does Your Mama Know About Me. Speaking of her being one of Bette Midler's former backing vocalists, I wonder how Bette is going to personalize the three Motown girl group covers on her upcoming CD.

I didn't have a clue the Undertones ever recorded that type of material. Almost as big a shock as the Proclaimers' version of Otis's "These Arms of Mine" or McFly on youtube with their acoustic version of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine".
