The fun thing about Motorcity Various-Artists collections is that they were often-times based on a theme. One such example is the 2-CD "DIVAS" collection and the Tribute to H-D-H collection, among others. Enjoy!

The posting of the Motorcity "DIVAS" thread has completed. I hope you'll enjoy it!
Thanks again for your patience. Please feel free to post your comments now.
And, also, a GREAT BIG THANKS to Kenny for his uploading expertise!
- Philles/Motown Gary
Random thoughts -
I now realise that I only have one half of the Divas set - I had thought there were two separate volumes [[i.e.2 different releases). Silly me.
There are a plethora of different sets of licensed tracks [[such as the Motorcity ones above) that seem to have similar track listings. I have a few of em - so several repeat titles lol.
Freda Payne's "Memories and Souvenirs" is a great track - one I go back to regularly. I think Edwin Starr also recorded it.
The Supremes "I Want To Be Loved" is another very good song and performance by the girls. Very contemporary for the time and reminiscent of Whitney Houston [[maybe Donna Summer too. With a bit of luck this one could have scored a hit.
Billie Calvin sounds fantastic on "Wishing On A Star".
I think I prefer Jimmy Ruffin's [[solo?) version of "On The Rebound"
I expect Kenny will soon be out of space for posting photos on here.
Mystery, are you saying that you're missing a disc from the first "DIVAS" set, leading you to think you
had to purchase DIVAS 2 in order to get the second half of "DIVAS 1"? LOL!!! On my copy, the discs are clearly marked Disc 1 and Disc 2. I think that would have been my first clue that something was missing! LOL! I only laugh because we luv ya! To be sure we're on the same page, there are two separate "DIVAS" sets -- "DIVAS" [[as seen & heard above), and "DIVAS 2", which I have on order. Both are 2-CD sets, totalling 4 discs.
I, too, love Billie Calvin's "Wishing On A Star". I also love Billie's solo version of "You've Got The Love I Need" which sounds nearly identical to Motown's Undisputed Truth original. Speaking of whom, I'm disappointed and am left wondering why Brenda Evans wasn't among the 108 Motown artists recording with Ian.
I, too, love Freda's "Memories & Souvenirs", and The Supremes' "I Want To Be Loved", which is really kinda different for them. I haven't yet formed an opinion of Jimmy solo vs. Jimmy & Brenda's duet version of "On The Rebound".

As I said before, great voices rubbish arrangements thanks to Levine! Most never got paid so it is alleged!
I think it was when I went to pick up my copy of DIVAS from him that Ian Levine told me that he couldn't believe that he hadn't included Liz Lands in the collection as she was "the biggest diva of them all". Maybe it was because of that omission that he felt obliged to issue a Divas 2.
Gary, you have been busy again. Interesting thread.
144man, your post above now reminds me of an interview when Liz Lands and Mary Wells were together [perhaps when recording 'Walk The City Streets'], and they agreed that they were both crazy....and they felt it was just a part of being in show business.
Are you as bothered with all the rip offs at Motown ? Just wondering.
Did Anyone leave Motown [ and they almost all did ] happy and with pockets stuffed ??
As for Levine we should all wish we could lead such a wildly crazy ambitious zany adventurous exciting and FUN life !!!!
Anyone in the music business comparable ? Phil Spector comes to mind . Neil Bogart. Clive Davis. People that took the bull by the horns. Herb Alpert.
excellent work Gary !!!

Motorcity fans, have you had a chance to check out any of the tunes in this -- our latest Motorcity Records installment?
There's no doubt about it. Ian Levine is the King of Compilations! My personal favorite is the "Divas" mini-series. How about you? What are your favorite Motorcity CD comps and why?
From this thread, the only cd I have is BABY LOVE by the Supremes. I think I bought it really cheap out of a cut-out bin in NYC. Looking at the titles, I knew it wasn't Diana, Mary, and Flo. But because I am a completist [sometimes] when it comes to the Supremes, I bought it. My absolute favorite from it was CRAZY 'BOUT THE GUY, a song I loved when I first heard it on the GIRL GROUPS OF THE MOTOR CITY collection. The remakes of BABY LOVE and STONED LOVE are pretty good as well.
Re Motorcity, my favorite comp overall is the MOTOR CITY DANCE PARTY set issued by Quality Records in 1990. Funny, I don't think I ever listened to the entire set. But I particularly enjoyed the selections by Martha Reeves [HEAT WAVE and NUMBER ONE], Hattie Littles' THE TROUBLE WITH ME, Sherri Taylor's LOVE IS LIKE AN ITCHING IN MY HEART, and a lot of others.
Hey Reese! I agree that "Crazy About The Guy" is the overall best track that Ian produced on The Supremes. It's certainly the most Motown-ish!
I'm not familiar with "Motorcity Dance Party", but I'll have to check it out. If the track line-up is as appealing as the comp title is exciting, it sounds like a winner!
Reese, I checked out Motorcity "Dance Party" on eBay. Did you know there are 4 separate volumes available? Not only that, I found a brand new SEALED 3-Volume, 60-track CD set of "Motorcity Dance Party" for a mere $16.99! As expected, over half of the tracks are duplicates, but there's a huge array of songs that will fill in many gaping holes in my Motorcity collection. Not only that, the seller ships all orders via FREE 3-4 day shipping! Boy, you sure can't beat that! Thank you so much for the heads up about "Motorcity Dance Party"! I couldn't wait to share this good news with you!

Gary, make that 5 separate volumes of Motorcity 'Dance Party'...
* Vol 1: The Foot Stompers
* Vol 2: Love Dancin'
* Vol 3: Dancin' To Keep From Cryin'
* Vol 4: Summer Sizzlers
* Vol 5: Soul Satisfaction
I think the Quality label Mary Wells album differs from the original release of 'Keeping My Mind On Love' album, in featuring the extended version of 'You're The Answer To My Dreams' ..and also in dub mix version?
I don't have the original Motorcity release so I can't compare.
I do know that the version of the title track on the Quality cd is longer than the version on the MOTOR CITY DANCE PARTY set. I actually enjoy the edited track more as it seems to cut out some of the more strained vocals by Mary. Granted, I do know that she was suffering from throat cancer at the time.
I think 'Keeping My Mind On Love' is about one minute shorter in length on the Quality CD album, than on the original Motorcity release - which is about seven minutes.
'You're The Answer To My Dreams' runs for nearly eight minutes, as does the dub mix. The original Motorcity album version has an edit of about half that running time.
And it seemed unusual to find a dub mix on a Motorcity album.
Yes, the extended version of 'Keeping My Mind On Love' does reveal the damage to Mary's voice.
And on 'Stop Before It's Too Late', she is almost whispering.......
To Westgrand & Reese: I have Mary Wells' "Keeping My Mind On Love" CD on the Motorcity/Charly label. It was the very first Motorcity purchase I ever made. Come to think of it, Mary Wells' "My Guy" was the first Motown record I ever bought. Clearly, I owe her a lifetime of gratitude.

Haven't yet decided on my favourite compilations...or why they are favourites....
..but, although the above link for 'Hit and Miss' on Motorcity Vol. 1 runs for 4.02, very interesting to note that, according to the insert, the track on the actual CD runs for 7.07.......
Which now has me wondering where I would need to look among my collection, to find it.....
..and now I remember....
'Cream Of The Crop', Vol 3.......
I have this "Supremes" release! I saw it in a rack of cheap cd's. I picked it up to see what they put on this compilation and discovered tracks I'd never heard of. Of course, once bought, I realized what this was. I have a few, including one that looks like a live set by the Mary, Scherrie & Susaye grouping that is just some FLO's tracks.
Hey Thom! It's been ages, Stranger! Are you referring to "The Best Of The Supremes Featuring Scherrie Payne, Jean Terrell, and Lynda Laurence: Live And More" [[Produced By Steve Weaver)?
--------------
Scratch the above, Thom. It finally sunk in that you're referring to a Mary, Scherrie & Susaye release. Just another senior moment here!

I'm really happy to see the first 'Divas' set featured on this thread....
One reason, it includes Betty Kelly's 'Giving Me The Runaround'.
Playing it right now. One of the sweetest, poignant Motorcity tracks, which has, to my ears, a wistful, sad charm all of its own.
What makes it so attractive is the female chorale harmony of the background vocals, carefully blended with Betty's gentle vocal ...and the light, theremin-like woodwind sequence which drifts in and out, lending distinction to the background.
I remember originally finding this on the 'Summer Swingbeats' album....and indeed, there is a summer sound to it. A real favourite.
Glad you like it, Roger! "DIVAS [[Vol. 2)" is on its way! Should arrive later this week. I'll share it when the time comes.
It took me a while to realise I did not already have this release.
I now have Vols. 1-4 collection, and for a very reasonable price.
Playing it now. The sound quality does seem noticeably better than even some other releases which I already felt to be good.
Maybe that tag line 'Dolby Surround' has something to do with it....
I wonder if they were trying to make the buyer think that "with the originals" meant the cuts were blended with the original Supremes....Gary:
[NOTE: SLAM Records didn't even bother to capitalize the letter "o" on credits for duets with The Originals, thus referring to them as "the originals".]
That's a perfectly valid reason for wondering, Boogiedown....
And if this was a betting situation, a perfectly valid reason for putting good money on it!
In addition to the mistakes already mentioned ['Signed Sealed Delivered I'm Yours' being credited to The Supremes, and 'Band Of Gold' to Syreeta] it also has to be said that the presentation of artist credits on the 'Going For A Song' set is regrettably less than professional.
Several spelling errors, which could have easily been prevented if someone had just checked......
Motown Revue [but spelled Review on original releases]
Francis Nero;
The Marvellettes;
'Mr Postman';
Ronnie McNair;
Were Incredible..and with no name check for Ronnie McNeir;
Barbara Randolf
Betty Levette
On The Rebound - no credit for Brenda Holloway
I'm Gonna Run Away With You.....
A misunderstanding on their part such as that had occurred to me, too, Boogie. Who knows what they were thinking. Whether it was ignorance on their part, or outright con-artistry by using a photo of Motown's Diana, Mary & Flo, as they did, I wouldn't put anything past them. Shame on SLAM!
Boogie & Westgrand, whichever the case may be, I'm surprised that Motown didn't raise holy Hell with SLAM and make them take it off the market.
Gary, it could well have been noticed at the time, but maybe no-one then alerted whoever was administering Motown copyright?
As with all our lives....while we often think about something, then doing something about it can be a quite different matter haha
[Thought for the Day: "It is never too late to be what you might have been"]
Which reminds me of something I had not thought about in decades, regarding misrepresentation....
Back in the late 60s/early 70s, my sister borrowed an album from a friend.....by a reggae artist, and which featured Motown songs.
There was something plainly wrong with it. I can't remember just now if the title and lyrics were correct, but other songwriter names were being credited....or different lyrics were being used.
Whatever it was, I went to the reference library and found the relevant address for Motown copyright here in the UK, and wrote straight away.
Received a prompt response, commenting that they had checked, were in full agreement, and expressing their thanks for bringing it to their attention.
They confirmed they would ensure that any royalties would now be directed to the correct parties, and thanked me again.
There may perhaps have been subsequent legal action....
Bettye LaVette's 'Jimmy Mack' is now playing here, and so just sharing this thought, in case there is anyone left who has not yet spotted it...
Those background voices must surely be Rosalind and Annette....
I have to guess that the lead vocal was originally intended for Martha...and the track would have featured on the 'Martha Reeves & The Vandellas Motorcity album' that never was......
Gary, it has taken me a while to actually find the release I was talking about. And I was pretty wrong about everything! It's not a live album at all. It's called Songs In The Name Of Love. It features a photo ph Susaye, Mary & Scherrie on the cover. The same photo also appears on the back of the CD and is the picture under the disc. Inside there is a very bad bio of the group. It claims to be the current version of Mary Wilson and the Supremes but, in fact, is a voice I've never heard before singing all the songs. At first you might think it's Sundray Tucker, but the voice has an even sweeter, lighter sound. It's very wearing. Arrangements are not quality! Anyway, I scanned a few pages and am posting.
