Just did a little research and I found out that The Supremes Greatest Hits had been released on cassette & 8 track as Vols. 1 & 2 and were starting to be sold separately at the time the second Greatest Hits collection had come out in Dec. 1969. So the Vol. 3 was added to the title in order to avoid confusion at retail.

According to Discogs, The Miracles Greatest Hits From The Beginning was released on 4 track tape cartridges in 1965 without the Vol. 1 or 2 treatment [or had two volumes of the collection released separately].
