Mine was caused by looking directly at three sparklers being lit with each other at the same time, while my eyes were dilated from being in darkness. I avoid flash bulbs, and sun in the eyes... but I work outside every day for my career, there is no pain or discomfort involved in being outside... trying to drive into the sun, YES... but just being outdoors, NO. While camera flashes can give a person a temporary vision issue, they are never permanent and cannot damage your eyes. The condition is called phototoxic retinopathy.
