The DJ's rejecting The Cake as just another one of THOSE "Spectoresque" records may have been part of it, and we can't forget that the British Invasion knocked many of the American Girl Groups off the charts. What's weird is that The Cake's Spectorized records weren't released until 1967 -- AFTER the Girl Group era. By then, Motown had hit hard and strong. You would think that the DJs might have been less anti-Spector by then. The Cake's "Baby It's Me" is a really great record that deserved a chance, unlike the rip-off by The Castanets which was clearly attempting to rob The Crystals masterpiece in a second-rate way. I guess we'll never know the rhyme nor the reason for such failures.
If you think that "Baby It's Me" 'took the cake', here ya go, John -- have another slice!
