According to Darlene Love's book, My Name Is Love, they were sick of having having to share the writing credit with Phil on songs that he produced [[they patched things up by the time they gave him Ike & Tina Turner's "River Deep - Mountain High").

You're very welcome, Eddie! It's true, Phil lost his most consistent writers -- Jeff & Ellie -- when they left to become full-time staff writers at Red Bird Records, although Phil still had Gerry & Carol [[Goffin & King) and Barry & Cynthia [[Mann & Weill), as well as Pete Adreoli [[Anders) & Vinnie Poncia. Yeah, Jeff & Ellie would submit a song to Phil; Phil would make a small change or two, and then claim co-songwriter credit for the entire song! Shrewd as hell, but I assure you he wasn't the only one doing it back then. Jeff & Ellie put up with it for the opportunity to work with Phil Spector in order to further their career, which it certainly did. They got along good with Phil, and, heaven knows, their work relationship created some great material for Philles for a couple of years.
