Too many fish..Donna Loren and Blossoms

Not bad tho it would have been nice to see the Marvelettes do it. I wonder why they didn’t https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BJ3xc1WhOJU

Has anyone run across any clips of The Marvelettes singing live and not lip-synching, other than the footage from the 1963 Motortown Revue?

Thanks. Obviously, Gladys and Kat are lip-synching, but Wanda might well have been able to replicate the lead vocal note-for-note, although I'm still a bit skeptical about that.

This video clip is dubbed over with the original recording. For whatever reason, it was issued this way on the Motown dvd a while back.

However, on the HULLABALOO boxed set, the original clip is used and the girls are singing live.

The quality isn't the greatest, but you can hear the girls singing live. I believe Gladys and Kat are singing along with the Andantes. And at 01:41, right before the sax solo, you can hear Wanda throw in an "Oh yeah," that isn't on the record.

Right you are. Here's the original clip:

And, yes: I think Gladys & Kat are definitely singing over the Andantes. I'd just never looked at this clip because the others [[with the lip-synch) were better visually.

At Shindig and Hullabaloo, there was always a lot of studio/live scrambling, so I suspect this number is one of those mish-mashes.

What I always loved about "Too Many Fish in the Sea" [[once I learned later - much later - that there were 4 Marvelettes at the time) was figuring out which one of the 4 sang "short ones, tall ones, fine ones, kind ones." Obviously, Wanda's voice is distinctive on "kind ones" and she does lip sync those words in the clip above. Gladys seems to start off and yes, it does sound like her on "short ones." But then Katherine has both "tall ones" and "fine ones" in the middle. Which one was her voice originally, and which one was Georgeanna's? Does anyone know?

Where else could this important piece of music trivia be discussed and analyzed! Thank goodness for SDF!

You know, the Rascals did this song on one of their early albums, too, and did it pretty well. Nice to see someone covering a Marvelettes song. Might be a good topic for a thread.

I was wondering the same thing. Does anyone think Donna Loren has a pretty good voice/Soul?

I was surprised from the clip at what a good voice she had! She really was a belter. I remember her from those Beach Party movies and I remember seeing an album of hers [[on Capitol I think) from back then. But really, the girl could sing! And dance too. She does a good job on "Too Many Fish," I think, though of course I still prefer the Marvelettes' version.

Yes I agree on all points! I only had a vague memory of her and then googled her. Quite interesting and she was married to Lenny Waronker president of WB records. She’s started recording and performing again after raising her family.

For a number of years, Donna was the TV face of Dr. Pepper, and she did a slew of commercials for them. Here's one:

Since some of you are apparently familiar with Donna Loren, I have a question...........I am almost certain that I remember seeing her on American Bandstand sometime in the mid 60s singing Lulu's "Let's Pretend," but yet I cannot find any evidence that she ever recorded that song. So did I dream that appearance?

    Luke:

Thank you thank you thank you! I knew I wasn't imagining that. Now for the main question....how come I have never been able to find that on any album or collection? Hearing it here now on this clip only wants me to have it that much more. So is it available somewhere? How did it do chartwise?

It looks like her Reprise material has never been anthologized. I can't find that she ever issued an album on that label, so maybe there's only a few singles left behind. Too bad they weren't included along with the Capitol recordings on the compilation that's out there, that looks excellent.
