This is truly a shock.
RIP Loleatta Holloway
Just yesterday evening, I placed a post asking for prayers for Loleatta, never dreaming that she was already gone.
So many people seem to remember Loleatta for her dance music, but she sure made some great soul scorchers for Aware & "Cry To Me" stands right up there with the best ballads ever & not to be forgotten is "Only You", her wonderful duet with Bunny Sigler. Her phrasing, her way of caressing the lyric of a ballad & her powerhouse voice. Loleatta was simply a dynamic vocalist & though not handled correctly, it was wonderful to see her voice rise to the top again with her voice pushing Black Box to the top of the charts. What a renaissance!
Just last year, we were treated to a dynamic performance by Loleatta at the Park Central Hotel, where she absolutely ripped up the place with her soaring vocals. And we were looking forward to seeing her again.
My sincere condolences to her family, friends, manager Ron Richardson & her fans all over the world. Though remembered best for her dance music, Dance Music hasn't lost a giant, Soul music has as well. Because whether her uptempo music was called "Disco" or "Dance Music", there's one thing for certain & that is that Loleatta was singing nothing put pure, unadulturated SOUL MUSIC!
Loleatta Holloway - R.I.P. & thank you for all of the wonderful music! You will definitely be missed!
Damn. Loved me some "Hit and Run". A total classic. She will be remembered fondly.
Another legend gone,great voice..r.i.p.

Very sorry to hear of her passing. She's now with her husband Floyd Smith.
RIP, Loleatta, and thank you...
Mikey--would that be the same Floyd Smith that cut the moody "Going Nowhere Fast" for Dakar in the late '60s?
Best,
Mark
Hi Mark:Probably the same Floyd Smith. He did work in the Chicago area during this time.

Sad News R.I.P Loleatta Thank you for the great Music and memories
From Rock and Soul Magazine-1977
I love the way Marky Mark was able to bring her back to the fold and put her in the video Good Vibration. RIP.
Loleatta's passing has been given a lot of coverage in the UK national news; would she have been surprised at just how well respected she was in the UK? Hopefully her family and close friends will get some comfort by seeing some of these highly complementary obituaries which illustrate just how much she was rated here.
Interesting article on Loleatta Holloway in UK national newspaper contrasting her fame compared with Liz Taylor…….Loleatta receives great praise

I just had the chance to sit down and play my favorite Loleatta Holloway perfomance of RUNAWAY ,with the SALSOUL ORCH.
The song itself is sooo awesome ,and has been covered by a few other very good artists ,but her version is the ultimate performance. Truth is that as awesome as her version is ,she had the flu when she cut the vocal track for it ,and still gave a stellar performance. She will be missed...................
One of my favorites from 1973 "Mother Of Shame". I still have the single in my collection.

For those of you who are Emusic members, Emusic just added Kent's The Hotlanta Soul of Loleatta Holloway for $5.99.
