    Recording Temptations background vocals

Was Melvin miked separately from everyone else?

In seeing Motown 25 and Motown Returns to the Apollo, Melvins voice was so powerful, he added bass lines to some of the 4 Tops songs.

My reason for asking is, some passages his voice is very prominent whereas on others he seem perfectly in unison with the others. For example, on You Beat Me To The Punch, certain passages he sounds like a bear but he's in and out. Was it control on his part, or were the engineers doing it to embellished certain background parts? Anyone have any theories?
