I've been told this was a live performance that was better visually than to hear on disc.

It's better visually from the standpoint that things like The Point and the A Chorus Line fall a bit flat without seeing it. This applys even moreso to things like the TV Soundtrack to Diana! and On Broadway where the skits work better sonically if you've seen them first and can revisulaize them. As a kid, I remember the Cosby/Ross Love Story bit only made sense to me because there was a picture of Diana in a fat suit included in the gatefold.

Is there a DVD of this concert then, or just the LP/cd?

There was a TV special on NBC that was pretty close to the Broadway show.

The show aired as a tv special in Japan, but segments were switched around.

I saw the show live before buying the album. So it was easy for me to visualize what was happening. But aside from the mime segments in SMILE/SEND IN THE CLOWNS and THE POINT, I don't think much was lost in the translation from show to album. And Diana was in very good voice throughout.

I’ve never seen or heard this show. I know the show is legendary in Diana Ross fan circles so I suppose at some point I ‘ll have to track this down. The setlist certainly represents an approach to show biz that’s pretty much done and gone. At what point in Diana Ross’ career did she stop doing so many standards [[besides the Lady Sings segment) and specialty numbers and just concentrate on performing songs from her current album and her vast catalog of her own hits?

It was a great "show". It wasn't so much a concert. Diana was in great voice. With any visual production some is lost when you only listen and don't see it. When I first heard this album I just referenced the photos from the show on the inside of the album and let my imagination go to work.

I have seen both the TV special and also the live concert from Japan. It was great to finally see it but for some reason the sequence was not the same as the album. It made me wonder which one was right. If I ever convert the VHS tape to DVD I think I will sequence it the same way as the album as that is what I'm familiar with.

AN EVENING WITH... was the last tour with standards and hits. After that , she basicially stuck to her own material, except for the 1983 tour, when she added FAMILY, RIBBON IN THE SKY, and BEAT IT to her show.
