As far as I know Marv is fine, just retired.

I think he should receive more credits for his role and influence in music....Thats's why I'm trying to collect info on him and do some research and hopefully an interview/article in the near future

Good plan, Donny. His playing was unique, and he was around from the earliest days of Motown.

Listen Marv Tarplin shares writing credits on some of Smokey's/Miracles and to a lesser extent Marvin Gayes biggest hits.......

I saw him perform along with Smokey about four years ago and his work and collabs were a major portion of the second act of Smokes Show, Smoke sang/Marv played.

There is no way possible that I could tell you which of his guitar riffs/solos were my favorites because he participated in writing so many...although this is probably my favorite jam...... his playing simply amazing:

he certainly is... I know he wrote a lot of songs for smokey and performed with him for decades dut does someone knows if he also played on the records?...Cause a lot of times I think I'm hearing david t. walker's style/sound on smokey 70' s records..I might be wrong!!

Donny, I checked my Smokey's LP's and he's mentionned on "Pure Smokey", "A quiet storm", "Love breeze" and "Warm thoughts".

Is he also mentioned as musician or only as composer...for instance: Cruisin is a song composed by tarplin, dut the actual record sounds a lot like david t walker...I'm trying to figure out what the signature sound of mr. tarplin is...I always thought he played on all those records but lately I have doubts about it...

btw it doesn't mean I doubt mr.tarplin's greatness even if he didn't play some of those licks and riffs on some of my favourite smokey tunes...I feel he wrote very beautifull songs and played incredible melodies...

Marv Tarplin is one of the greatest rhythm guitarists of all time. Without him, the Miracles wouldn't have fully stood out the way they did. The fact they had Marv with them as both a guitarist and songwriter helped to make them truly "miracle".

Thuis site was actually put together by Jeanne Sorensen - a great friend and supporter of Motown artists and a very good friend of mine. What a beautiful thing to do in Marv's memory. Interesting to learn that Marv played on Philly Dog with Earl and the Funks. Must listen again. Marv's playing was unmistakeable.

When I was a freshman in college, I made the train trip from NYC to Atlantic City to catch Smokey. As the band went to set up the show, I walked right to the front of the stage and shouted "Marv Tarplin!" He came up to the front, and we talked for a little bit about music, jazz performance, and the business, and he told me I had to meet him backstage after the show. He was extremely kind to me, signed two of my Smokey LPs, and talked to me for an hour plus. It's a bummer I couldn't get pictures, but there was a no camera policy backstage for anyone who had not paid for the VIP Ticket Package. Marv was great!

I had an opportunity to meet Marv when he played with Smokey at a Casino in Aurora Illinois. Smokey and Marv were on stage the entire time and during mid point of the show Smokey introduced him as the Miracle no one knew and recited some of Marv's history while Marv played some of his best known intros to Miracles songs. Marv was under a single spotlight during this time. Regrettably they shared the bill with The Delfonics who at the time was featuring Garfield Fleming who was trying to tell folks he was David Ruffins Brother......got to meet them too........as Dr Smith would say...Oh the pain........
