    Goldmine/groovesville review

I've got a few volumes in this series, but have forgotten what were the circumstances behind these releases. I think they were aimed at the northern soul crowd. They featured tracks recorded in Detroit for the Groovesville label. Some of the releases featured tracks that were misidentified as far as the artist was concerned like The Goings On, which was not J.J Barnes and Solid As A Rock, which was not Joyce Vincent. Anyone have any information? How many volumes were there?

Kamasu .. my understanding is that Goldmine came to some agreement with Don Davis/Groovesville and were let loose in their tape archives .. as a result they were able to release a number of compilations aimed at the "NS" crowd, and '60s Soul fans in general ..

The were three "Groovesville Review" Releases ..

Looking through my own "archives" there were the following associated releases ..

The Solid Hitbound Story .. GSCD 53 .. the first release in the series which has the following in its liner notes ..

"In conjunction with the Original Historical Music Society of Detroit we at Goldmine are pleased to announce an exclusive deal with Don and Will Davis and their Groovesville Productions. Via extensive research through their archives on licensed, eventual release and unissued masters, we present this excellent CD which is part of an ongoing series."

When I visted Detroit, I met up with a gentleman named Bill Baron, involved with managing some ex Motowners including the Miracles and Velvelettes [[I think).
He kindly took us on a tour around some 'sights' - Berry Gordy's mansion, Aretha Frankin , Levis Stubbs houses etc [[late Saturday night as I recall).
I distinctly remember him pointing out Don Davis' old studios, and him telling us that a deal had been agreed to release all the Groovesville recordings.......it seemed a rather grand idea I thought at the time......I guess this was the 'deal' that led to Goldmine issuing all thoses CDs later. I have them all.....some great music on them.

Great information, Roger. There seems to have been a lot of overlap on some of these CDS. And if I'm not mistaken Groovesville and Solid Hitbound were two seperate labels? Darrell Banks' LP is getting reissued by WEA.
