"Nightflight" Tue Oct 9, 9P-12M ET:...a 3 hour Tribute to Rev Frank Wilson [[RIP)

Hello there, folks. The loss of Frank Wilson last week still reverberates with me as it does, I'm sure, with many of you. Reverend Wilson's involvement with Motown and it's artists created much of what has been the best and most unique of Motown. Whether the songs showcased Frank as a vocalist, writer or producer, he added a very special touch.

We all know his own recordings, as well as his writing and producing for Brenda Holloway, Diana Ross and the Supremes and the Temptations, the Four Tops and the Jean Terrell led Supremes and many other Motown artists...solo or together...they made "such sweet music".

You'll hear 3 hours worth of those recordings, along with Frank Wilson rarities...music that brought us ALL "closer to heaven" [[where he is)...tonight...on "Nightflight"...on WOMR 92.1 FM Provincetown and WFMR 91.3 FM Orleans
and streaming live worldwide in digital stereo at www.womr.org
    Thanks so much!
    John

Even though your special night tributes cannot help but start on a note of sadness, the notes of beauty and love that we'll hear tonight through Frank's music and your commentary, knowledge, observations, and opinions are just as real. And I know that's what I'll take with me once tonight's show has ended. Every single show you create, John, is a heartfelt tribute to great artists, writers, producers, and musicians. It's what you do continually--it never ends, and it doesn't begin because of their passing. It's NIGHTFLIGHT's "specialty of the house," and you serve it up fresh and delicious and piping hot every Tuesday night. My compliments to the chef!

    Hi John and the gang!

Look forward to hearing all the goodies and extended mixes John has worked up. Frank Wilson had his hand in so many classics and cant wait to revisit them with everyone. See everyone later....

Honoring Mr. Wilson is most appropriate tonight, BRAVO!

I have always had an ear for music with which he was creatively involved whether in writing, producing, and/or singing. Brenda's "Just Look What You've Done" has to be one of my most favorite classic Motown songs.

Vincent Dimirco was a New York songwriter & guitarist. Frank Wilson is quoted as saying that he usually built his songs around the piano accompaniment. In the case of Up the Ladder it was written with an eye to building it around Vincent's guitar

i seem to recall reading that either the writer of Up The Ladder or Stoned Love was still a teenager. Believe that both Vincent and the writer of Stoned Love were from one of the NY boroughs... Queens or the Bronx maybe?

I wish Brenda had stayed a couple more years at Motown and continued to work with Frank. What magic they made together.

One reason Brenda claimed that she liked the BS&T version was because they performed it more in the manner that she had wanted to record/perform it. Instead Berry insisted on strings and other Motown flourishes.

Thomas Kenny was the young Detroit teenager whose compositions Frank Wilson heard on a Detroit radio contest. Frank later contacted him & asked what else he might have. Thomas presented Stone Love & the rest is history.

The extended remixes all sound so gorgeous. Everyone who was involved with the beautiful, original recordings is being acknowledged and appreciated in addition to the multi-talented Frank Wilson. Bravo.

About 'You Made Me So Very Happy' Brenda has been quoted:
"My boyfriend had quit me, I was so sad", Brenda says "I thought, you know what, I'm gonna write a song about being happy, 'cause this man is crazy. Leaving me? I'll show him " Brenda called her sister Patrice for help on the song, explaining simply 'This is a hit'. She called Berry Gordy and told him the same thing. He brought in Frank Wilson, who contributed the dynamic bridge, which Brenda says 'made the song'.
But the singer/songwriter didn't like the final result. " We were on the verge of psychedelic sounds, all that rock and funk", she says. Gordy's response was all business: "I'm Berry Gordy. You're Brenda Holloway. I'm putting up the money. We'll do it the way I want it, thank you".
Brenda's version barely dented the Top 40. Then the jazz-rock version by Blood, Sweat and Tears became a gold smash in 1969. It was arranged, Brenda has said, exactly the way she imagined it.
