Here we are, nine weeks into this year's annual poll, with the end in sight!

It's heartening to have new people joining in all the time and most brave souls back-track and vote for the previous years, which keeps me on my toes. It's still a surprise when somebody votes for a song that everybody else missed. Certain B-sides are proving to be more popular than a lot of A-sides.

It's a bit of fun and I hope those participating are enjoying doing so.

    MOTOWN ANNUAL POLL - 1969

Every week from now until the end of December, we will ask people to list their
favourite singles by year of release.

The years will commence with 1959/61 and then progress, one year per week, up to and including 1972.

This week, we are collecting votes for the year 1969.

Your task, should you wish to try it, is to list up to ten favourite singles released in 1969, in order.

Selections are to be made from singles included in each volume of The Complete
    Motown Singles series.

Where different singles were released in the UK, these may be included too.

Both "A" and "B" sides may be selected.

All through the voting period, you can catch up by voting for earlier years.

The final results will be presented for your perusal over the Christmas holidays.

The invitation to participate in the poll is extended to everybody.

Votes should be sent to eric.charge66@btinternet.com

...here's my faves from 1969 ...in fave order ...another challenging year...!

10 pts When Are You Available - Shorty Long
9 What Does It Take [[To Win Your Love) - Jr Walker & The All-Stars
8 Running Away [[Ain't Gonna Help You) - The Temptations

    6 I'd Be A Fool Right Now - StevieWonder

We'll soon be entering the seventies and embarking on the last lap of votes for this year's poll.

There may still be people who want to join in and that's perfectly fine. I've had several new bods this week who have sent me their lists going right back to 1959/61.

The closing date for votes will be 23rd December, so there's still plenty of time.

I was asked to consider using the results to grade the popularity of both producers and composers. I've spent a few hours looking at 1968 to see if this would be possible. In '68, there were twenty eight different production teams behind the nominated songs. The combinations of names in the composer credits are way in excess of that. I can manage an analysis of the producers but composers might be too big a job [[especially if I want to get the results out in the holidays).

There's no reason why people shouldn't vote ahead - four people have completed voting already - if they so desire.

The seventies are going to very interesting, as we will have a solo Diana Ross versus the new Supremes.

The invitation to participate in the poll is extended to everybody.

Votes should be sent to eric.charge66@btinternet.com

    Eric

    From Eric...

So, here we are in the seventies. With HDH long gone and Norman Whitfield in the ascendancy, the flavour of the Motown Sound changes.

Ten people have already submitted their lists for 1970 and there are already three very popular records amongst the forty seven songs named so far.

I am still welcoming new voters - yesterday I was presented with a list that ran from the start to the very end and spent an interesting evening debating Motown with the voter.

The last day to submit votes is 23rd December, so there is plenty of time for people to join in.

    Have fun!

    From Eric...

Hi everybody. My goodness, here we are in the penultimate week of voting in this year's Annual Poll.

I've been getting votes in a variety of ways - by e-mail - by post – by telephone - by posts on SDF & Motown Treasures - and have been working on the spreadsheets daily to keep them up to date.

Ten people have already voted for their 1971 favourites and it's good to see records by "new names" are already nominated.

The closing date for voting will be 23rd December, giving everyone an extra one-and-a-half-weeks to catch up.

    Have fun!

Here's my 1971 list. But, I must admit that there's very little that I care about enough to even listen to. Apparently, for me, there was a big fall off from 1970 to 1971, By 1971, even The Best of vocal Soul music was not all that listenable to me. There was almost nothing left that I liked. After 1972, there was, indeed, virtually nothing I liked, except for some of the less funky jazz.

    1) Just My Imagination-Temptations
    2) If You Really Love Me-Stevie Wonder
    3) Shebeen-Hugh Masekela & Union of South Africa
    4) What Christmas Means to Me-Stevie Wonder
    5) Pass The Plate-Crusaders

    8) Bless You-Martha & Vandellas

I think it's very interesting that I've NEVER HEARD EVEN ONE of those cuts you chose as your top 10 from 1972. It shows how quickly I dropped out from listening to radio, and enjoying current music. I did hear "Smiling Faces Sometimes" a few times [[but not by The Temptations). I didn't like the song at all, in any case. I'm not sure if I'll be able to make a list for 1972. If I do, it will have to be made from listening to the snippets from the advert for the 1972 volume. Which DOESN'T EXIST as yet.

After looking at the list of releases, I see that I've heard only 2 of the recordings [[one by Gladys Knight & Pips, one by Stevie Wonder) released by Motown on singles in 1972. I don't think I could even come up with a Top 10 after listening to all those songs. I suspect that the only recordings I would like at all would be those by Junior Walker & All Stars and The Crusaders [[but perhaps not even the latter, as they were moving into a much more funky style by 1972, than I am likely to like). The last of the "summer wine" for me was being squeezed out in 1970 and 1971. The style of the music in 1972 and going forward was not at all to my liking. I can count the records I own from 1972- onward on my two hands [[as compared with many thousands even just from 1965-67, and even several thousand from 1967-69.

That's listenable, but not at all my kind of music. Had I bought it, I'd probably have only played it once every 20 years. Why do they list Syreeta first? I barely heard her voice in the background once. Was she playing an instrument? I'd have given it about a 2 out of 10. The singing is good, but I don't like the melody, song structure or instrumentation.

II didn't like "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye. But I liked it by Gladys Knight & Pips. I didn't like any of Marvin Gaye's songs after "You". I like "Sweet", major-key driven songs, with any beat, with smooth-voiced singers. I liked "Sweeter As The Days Go By" by Frank Wilson better than "Do I Love You". But, I liked "Suspicion" and even "Good Night Irene" by The Originals better than "Baby i'm For Real". I already started to turn the Soul radio stations off in early 1967. The music was already getting too funky for me.

The only non-Jazz records I bought in 1972 were probably by The Spinners and Stylistics. I probably bought only two records after 1972: "I'm Doin' Fine Now"-by New York City, and "Right Back Where We Started From" by Maxine Nightengale.
I didn't like the new, '70s instrumentation. I like twangy acoustic guitars without reverb, and plunky ivory pianos [[as opposed to electric plastic keyboards). Don't forget that I grew up with late 1930s and 1940s and early 1950s American Black music. By 1970, I was already past age 25 [[and my nostalgic years). I started getting ready to turn off the radio in early 1966.

I only continued buying records mainly because Motown was still cranking out some good songs from 1966-68. I hung on for the few "good" cuts [[to my taste-you understand) through about 1970. 1972 was pushing it tremendously.

I'll have to amend my 1972 list, as I forgot "A Breathtaking Guy" by The Marvelettes. It wasn't placed on Grapevine's list of eligible songs, but WAS released on a 1972 45, for the first time. Here's my updated list:
    1) Gonna Keep On Trying[[Till I Win Your Love)-Temptations
    2) Smooth Sailing[[From Now On)-Temptations
    3) A Breathtaking Guy-Marvelettes
    4) Walk In The Night-Jr. Walker & All Stars
    5) Spanish Harlem-Crusaders
    6) Don't Tell Me I'm Crazy-Edwin Starr
    7) Green Grow The Lilacs-Festivals
    8) I Can't Stand To See You Cry-Smokey Robinson & Miracles
    9) T.L.C.-P. J.
    10) It's The Same Old Love-Courtship

After all my complaining, it's actually quite a good list of high-quality recordings!

    ...from Eric

...there are just ten days to go before the poll closes on 23rd December.

Amazingly, I've had a couple of new bods joining in in the last few days [[hooray) and that makes me happy because the more people that take part, the more relevant the results will be.

With that in mind, I'd like to urge anyone who hasn't already sent me lists of their favourite A and B sides for each year to do so. In fact, if you struggle to come up with ten records, I'll settle for however many you feel comfortable with. Similarly, if there are years where you don't have much interest, then leave them out.

A lot of people have finished submitting votes in and I thank them from the bottom of my heart for providing such interesting selections and especially for the personal commentaries which have been so very interesting.

    Ten days to go!

    - Eric

What I really need is the soundbites from 1972, as I know what very few of those actually sound like.

Here is the chart for the earliest years included in the poll.

I should point out that I typed everything furiously, so every typo, abbreviation, mis-spelling and whatever other errors appear are all down to my incompetence or my need for speed.

The top spot was taken by an incredibly popular record. At various stages, as the weeksrolled by, it wasn't clear which of the top three records would come out aschampion but the Number 1 raced ahead in the final stages.

Number 1 collected more points than Numbers 5 and 6 combined. It also received
more than tentimes the number of points as the songs at the bottom end of the
    chart.

The 1972 chart topper would have ranked at the Number 9 spot here.

A number of voters decided not to commence participation in the poll with these
early years but a significantly higher number expressed a strong preference for
    these proto-Motown Sound songs.

One of the oddest years was 1962. Either one of the top five choices had the potential to be the chart topper and it's been fascinating watching them jostling for position. Just one point separates Number 2 from Number 3.

Surprisingly, nobody voted for Number 4 as their favourite record of the year but it was clearly a song that most people loved. Also surprising is the fact that a quarter of voters selected the Number 3 as their top choice, yet it was still eclipsed by two other Mary Wells tracks.

The Number 1 record scored more than double the points of any record outside the top ten and that is an indication of how strong 1962's favourites were.

Mary Wellsdeserves some sort of award for strong results in the years she was a
part of and she nearly scored the top three in 1962, an amazing feat.

Number 17 scored more than double the points of the lowest charting entry and
Number 14 scored three times the number of points of that lowest hit.

The 1963results threw up the most incredible Number 1. It gathered more points than anyother chart topper and was, by far, the most popular Motown record in thisyear's Annual Poll. It gathered nearly two and a half times as many points asthe 1972 Number 1. It collected twenty-one as many points as the Number 30.

Only fourpeople [[and you know who you are) didn't include the song in their top ten andnearly half the voters selected the song as their chart topper.
