Been playing some early Funk tunes today and I don't know why I never noticed it before but "Rise Up" by THE COMMODORES, released as Atlantic 45-2633 in 1969 a few years before they signed with Motown, is nothing more than a thinly disguised reworked version of "Night Fo' Last" by SHORTY LONG ..

"Rise Up" can be found on the C.D. "Funk Drops Volume 3" which was released in 2004 ..

Interestingly the C.D. booklet notes maintain that "Rise Up" was written by JERRY WILLIAMS JR [[ a.k.a. "SWAMMP DOGG" ) who produced the track, rather than by CLARENCE PAUL and SHORTY LONG who are listed as the songwriters for "Night Fo Last" ..
I wonder if Mr Gordy had anything to say about this when THE COMMODORES signed for his label ..
