Does anybody know how many Motown musicians and background singers featured on SOS by Edwin Starr. This sounds so much like it was recorded at Hitsville.

As they used to moonlight at Ric-Tic / Golden World it could have been the whole gang.
Probably not the whole gang, but surely a decent portion, and likely, the majority, were "Motown musicians".
Ed Wingate and JoAnne Bratton [[Jackson) used a similar crew of current Motown musicians together with other regular Detroit musicians [[who also had, in the past, or would in the future, work for Motown on Motown recordings). They rarely, if ever, used ALL the current Funk Brothers, together as an ensamble on individual sessions. James Jamerson and Bennie Benjamin were paid big salaries to keep them from the regular moonlighting as much as the others. Wingate did use a mix of Funk Brothers, other current Motown musicians, plus people like Don Davis, Joe Hunter, George McGregor, Melvin Davis, and others ALL of whom worked for Motown at some time or another [[what quality Detroit musician did not?).
Thanks for sorting that out Robb you are a pleasure to read.
