People who donate to the Motown Historical Museum will receive a limited edition Motown museum souvenir. [[Brandy Baker/The Detroit News)On Wednesday you can walk in the footsteps of Paul McCartney and other famous visitors, as the Motown Historical Museum is inviting the public to take tours of the museum free of charge during the first Esther Gordy Edwards Community Day.
The free tours will be offered from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in honor of Edwards, who founded the museum in 1985. Wednesday would have been the 92nd birthday of the accomplished businesswoman who was also Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr.'s elder sister, and a Motown vice president. Edwards died in August 2011.
"It was my grandmother's vision to maintain Hitsville USA, the original headquarters of Motown, so that generations could share in this important part of American history and be inspired to their own greatness," said museum CEO Robin Terry, in a statement. Terry is also Edwards' granddaughter.
While the tours are free, visitors who wish to make a donation will receive a limited edition Motown museum souvenir. The museum is at 2648 W. Grand Blvd., Detroit. Call [[313) 875-2264.
