    Jimmy McFarland

A version of Lonely Lover by Jimmy McFarland was posted a few years back on a UK Motown specialist website, which sadly appears to be no longer in existance.
This track was released on a compilation CD also a few years ago. Although annotated as being recorded by Motown, the CD was not released on any of the recognised Motown labels.

Although I've been on the look-out for other tracks by him, I've so far drawn a blank.

So my simple question is - was anything else ever recorded by him? If so, what were the tracks and were they ever officially released?

    Thanks so much !

I believe it was actually the Marvin Gaye version, which was sped up a little.

I don't believe that That Jimmy McFarland session was recorded by Motown. It was released on a small Los Angeles label [[RPR Records). And, to my knowledge, just was that label's A&R man or Jimmy's manager choosing that Marvin Gaye Jobete music song, for Jimmy to sing. The other side was not published by Jobete Music. As far as I know, no Motown people were involved in that record's production. The instrumentation sounds nothing like Motown. It was certainly recorded in L.A.

Motown [[UK) has released Marvin Gaye's version of "Lonely Lover" [[in the 1990s?). A US-style 45 with picture cover. It was a recording that remained in The Vaults during the 1960s. Did any Motown artists other than marvin ever record it?

Robb_K .. I have the U.K. 12" of Marvin's "This world Is Rated X", which includes "Lonely Lover" as a bonus track.
It was released in 1986, catalogue number ZT 40758. I'm wondering if this is the release you were thinking of ..

Someone has a copy of it up on E-Bay [[not me!!) .....

Seems there was a U.S. Tamla 12" that included it as well ..

You're right Roger. However, it's not the same version as the one I had in the early 80's. My guess is that I had the faster Marvin version. Come to think of it, I seem to recall that it was credited to Eddie Holland.

My memory ain't what it used to be . . . Eddie Holland, Frank Wilson Lol...

Digressing slightly from the original question, but I agree with Robb. The Jimmy McFarland version was certainly not a Motown recording.

As far as I recall, Motown issued a new mix from the multitrack with new overdubs [[never really understood why) on the 1986 release 'Motown Remembers Marvin Gaye'. An original mono mix was then issued on the 1994 'The Master' box set :-

The Four Tops cut a version in 1967 that remained in the vaults unitil it was issued [[mono mix) on 'This Is Northern Soul' Vol 2' a few years back. A newly remixed stereo version was then issued on the 'Lost & Found set: -

Could it be this one you are referring too?

The Marvin version for sure, just speeded up a lot!
