People Magazine - The Best Soundtracks Ever - January 23, 2012

    1. Purple Rain - From the opening strains of that church organ, with Pastor Prince proclaiming, "Dearly Beloved, we are gathered here today to get through this thing called life," this is a religious experience, a funk rock revelation. Props also to 1986's Parade, the Under the Cherry Moon soundtrack.

    2. Saturday Night Fever - No other soundtrack defined an era like this. The Bee Gees are the bell bottomed heroes of this epic set. Whenever Stayin Alive comes on, disco is no longer dead.

    3. Waiting to Exhale - A stellar cast of African American divas -- from Mary J. Blige and Aretha Franklin to star Whitney Houston - breathes real soul and sisterhood into Babyface written songs.

    4. Brokeback Mountain - The evocative, Oscar winning score and rootsy beauties like Emmylou Harris's "A Love That Will Never Grow Old" get to the heart of the gay cowboy romance.

    5. Lady Sings the Blues - Diana Ross, in her oscar nominated turn as Billie Holiday, does some of the best vocals of her career on signatures such as Strange Fruit, making them hers too.

Honorable Mention: Jay-Z's American Gangster - While not technically a soundtrack, this reformed thug's concept album, inspired by the gangster film of the same name, is a triumph of cinematic proportions.

Amazing list; I'm surprised how many magazines these guys are still publishing because that has kind of gone the way of the CD.

    Astounding about Readers Digest.

What is AARP, the Magazine and Bulletin???

AARP is the American Association of Retired People. I suspect anyone who becomes a member of AARP automatically becomes a subscriber to their magazines, hence the high circulation.
