I just checked another item off my bucket list.
[[You know, that list of things you must do, places you must go and people you must see before you die?)
Well, seeing a live performance by the iconic Diana Ross was certainly on my to-do list. I’m very happy to say I accomplished that feat Saturday evening at the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino in Biloxi.
I have to admit, I was really in a huff that the Motown superstar wasn’t offering interviews or a meet-and-greet opportunity for fans. But I soon reminded myself that the woman is a legend, and she’s 68 years old. She has the right to be a diva.
I wasn’t alone in my anticipation of her arrival: A full theater of fans were on their feet cheering when the lights dimmed and the band appeared on stage.
“The diva cometh,” I tweeted, as a sheer curtain fell from the ceiling and Ross appeared in a bedazzled red dress, surrounded by clouds of red tulle that took me straight back to “Mahogany.”
“I’m Coming Out” she yelled, as she sashayed across the stage, waving to the crowd.
In a strong voice and in sultry style only Ross could bring, she said she was taking us “way back” by singing hits like “My World is Empty Without You,” and “Touch Me In The Morning.”
Knowing I wasn’t going to be disappointed, I settled into my chair to enjoy the ride.
Through four costume changes, the songstress took us on a tour of her career, including Supremes collaborations and a Billie Holiday tribute.
Of course, “Stop! In the Name of Love” was a favorite, and she encouraged the audience to do those silly hand gestures with her — and we did.
Ross first changed from her racy red opening dress to a glamorous gold and white sequined gown. The serious yet sultry style of the dress seemed appropriate for her smooth-jazzy set, during which she asked the audience: “Anyone like jazz?”
When Ross later appeared in a royal blue number with a fringed cape that glowed and glittered with her every move, the crowd applauded and came to its feet to dance to tunes like “Why Do Fools Fall in Love?”
A slinky orange design with long sleeves and a very narrow skirt-tail was the next. Knowing that she has the audience eating out of her hand, she played with us, blowing kisses, shaking hands at the stage edge and stopping to vogue for cellphone photos. This pro knows how to work a very receptive crowd.
“What a wonderful audience you are,” she said.
Never stopping to chit-chat about a song, or her life, for that matter, Ross kept right on flowing from one song to the next. This was not an intimate performance. She simply wanted to do her thing.
For the finale, Ross appeared in a gown that resembled a disco ball and seemed to set the theater on fire with its glow.
Perhaps, we were all glowing, too, because when she sings “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” you can’t help but feel she’s singing and pointing to you personally.
Ross Gossip
After seeing Ross on Saturday, and being amazed at how wonderful she looks, I had to share this bit of gossip.
Last week, Wendy Williams [[of the Wendy Williams Show) said Ross is on the prowl for a hot young stud!
Apparently, the Motown diva is eager to jump on the Hollywood cougar craze, according to Williams. And insiders say Ross has recruited her son and daughter, Evan and Tracee, to help her land a hot young man. They are even calling the effort “Operation Cougar Love.”
[[Gasp!) Go, Diana.
A source told the Enquirer that Diana is simply not turned on by men her age. She says they’re not hip and have lost their lust for romance and adventure.
“Her ideal guy is a George Clooney or Alec Baldwin type — a manly man. She’s not necessarily set on someone in the entertainment industry, but Diana does want a wealthy, self-made man capable of catering to her needs.”
Wow! I say, go for it, girl. You still got it!
