Losers Lounge tribute to The Supremes Dec 8-10 in NYC

    http://www.loserslounge.com/

This evening I went downtown to Joe's Pub [[located inside the Public Theater) to
see The Losers Lounge tribute to the music of Diana Ross and The Supremes. It
was a fun show. Losers Lounge is a musical collective started by former
Psychedelic Furs member Joe McGinty. They perform several shows a
year--generally tributes to great pop songwriters and pop acts of the 20th
century. Members of the collective are all musicians and singers who work a
variety of gigs from bands, indie, broadway, off broadway, and touring shows to
    jazz and cabaret.

For tonight's Supremes show, they performed generally respectful versions of
their music, only verging on camp when the nature of the song called for it due
to its novelty quality or just pure camp appeal such as Muscles, No Matter What Sign You Are and Endless Love.

Highlights of the night: Love is Like an Itching in My Heart sung by a guy with
a good gruff rock/soul voice; The Happening, which the singer introduced as
"lyric wise, a really depressing song and lyrically a precursor to the shoegaze
genre, but don't worry, the music will keep you happy"; I Keep It Hid, very
well sung in the Broadway style; Love Hangover, sung by a very sexy woman named Katia; Musles,
performed by a flabby middle aged guy named Nick Danger who came on stage
gulping some muscle milk--this was a camp highlight, but only to be upstaged in
the camp department by Endless Love in which the singers and band wrung every
schmalzy moment out of the song; Ain't No Mountain High Enought got
everyone on their feet; and the show ended with a Supremes Christmas song
    "Little Bright Star".

The band consisted of 2 guitars, a bass guitar, drums, percussion, two horns,
two violinists and a keyboardist thus giving a decent reproduction of the full
motown sound on stage. Two background singers were on hand, dressed in sparkly
gowns and there was a rotating cast of lead singers, male and female.

    Here's the set list:

    Love Child [[instrumental)
    You Can't Hurry Love
    Come See About Me
Love is Like an Itchin' in My Heart
    The Happening
I Keep it Hid [[which was also a tribute to Jimmy Webb, the subject of the first
Losers Lounge show back in the 90's.)
    Theme from Mahogany
No Matter What Sign You Are
    Reflections
    Stoned Love
Where Did Our Love Go/Tainted Love [[Soft Cell Version)
    Ease on Down the Road
Stop in the Name of Love
    Muscles
    Endless Love
    Love Hangover
    I'm Coming Out
Ain't No Mountain High Enough [[Marvin/Tammi version which segued into Ross version at the end)
You Keep Me Hangin' On [[VAnilla Fudge version)
    Little Bright Star

Touch me in the Morning/Someday We'll Be Together was also supposed to be
performed but the singer was out due to illness so it got cut.

All in all a very fun night and it reinforced just how many good pop songs Diana
Ross and The Supremes recorded. Several of the songs were introduced, but the comments were limited to the nature of the songs themselves. NO talk of Supremes drama, chart position, sales, conspiracy theories, etc. The Losers Lounge actually appreciate the music of Diana Ross and The Supremes.

Thanks for the recap - I was hoping to make it one of the shows myself but couldn't in the end so your post is much appreciated...
