Stu.....

A while back [[like 3 or 4 years ago) I was logged on to a music website where I got into an argument....er, discussion about Fritz Richmond being worthy of being listed as one of the best bass players of all time. You were kind enough to come to both my and Fritz's defense.

I've lost the URL for the site. Assuming you're still posting there occasionally, could you post their address so I can find them again?

I've been asked to help them rework the Greatest Bassist list. Just yesterday I was debating Rockabilly bassists, and maintained that Bob Moore was much greater than Bill Black, although I like Black and his slap bass playing on early Elvis tracks...but Moore claims to have played on over 20,000 sessions [[not songs)...doing 20 sessions a week for years and years making him likely the most recorded musician on ANY instrument in history.

I don't know rockabilly that well, but would Fred Maddox [[The Maddox Brothers) fit into the argument. Some [[including The Experience Music Project) maintain that Fred was the best slap bass player around and helped lay the foundation for rock & roll in the late 30's and 40's.

Nice venues Doug. That part of the country has really become a golf mecca with the Oregon coast [[Bandon Dunes) now the top rated golf destination in the country.

Maddox was one of the first slap bass players and was a big influence on Black, although The Maddox Brothers considered their genre "Hillbilly' music [[God, I've learned WAY too much about bass). Johnny Burnettes brother, Dorsey was another early rockabilly bassist, although Burnette used a group of guys called the Rockabilly A-Team, Bob Moore, Grady Martin on electric guitar, Boots Randolph, etc on many of his recording sessions.

That's a weird keyboard list they have on there, Stu. Booker T is about 30 places above Isaac and Stevie. No Earl anywhere to be seen. No Greg Phillinganes and no Lincoln Mayorga.

Hi Dave...

I never spent too much time on the keyboard list although I did request a spot for Earl and Phillanganes on the list since they're both deserving. Booker T is mostly known as a keyboard player while Stevie and Isaac are more known for their vocals, etc, which explains Bookers high ranking I guess. Keep in mind that there are a lot of Prog fans and followers of bands who put some of these lists together and many studio players have gotten overlooked. I did get the Funk Brothers on the guitar list after badgering them quite a bit. The bass list is where I've had a lot of involvement. When I got there Jamerson was #6. I spent the better part of a year working on, debating, arguing, etc to correct that wrong and now...Jamerson is the undisputed #1 and we educated a lot of people, plus, I was able to get a lot of unrecognized studio bassists on the list.

The jazz piano list is funny. I was checking out that list one day and came across the name of a friend of mine, Mitch Forman...outstanding jazz artist. When I showed Mitch his name on the list he thought it was cool, and now every time I see him I tease him that he can only move up so long as he keeps playing and some of those ahead of him die off LOL.

Hi Ceasar. How's it going my brother? I've been busy as all heck with our Honda dealership...product shortages, tough economy, etc....but we're hanging in there pretty well all things considered. Happy to hear you're keeping busy and doing your thing. I hear some of your classic songs on sat radio from time to time. Keep in touch.

I knew the effort you put in for James, Stu. Good work on that. Isaac sat in uncredited for Booker T on a lot of stuff, while the latter had to go to school!

I guess that Green Onions and Hang Em High did a lot for Bookers rep. That's the stuff people recognise and remember I suppose. Plus his organ accompanymentto the piano on Otis' Try A Little Tenderness was a very nice experiment.

......did they change the lists? In looking at the "best" bass player lists, I don't see a general list, just by genre. They've also shortened the country/folk lists. Am I missing something?

Hey Doug. I think the cause of the confusion is the official site lists which appear on the music list page and other lists which are started by posters and debated in the forum sections. The official lists include the greatest rock bass guitarist list, along with bass guitar performances and basslines. Plus, there is an official jazz bass list which ranks jazz bassists. Obviously, Richmond would not be eligible for either of those lists. On the forum, there have been all genre and most skilled bassist lists which havve been debated by posters and is probably one of the lists where you argued for Fritz Richmond...although the criteria for all the lists generally focus on creativity, innovation, technical skill, versatility, and influence. Any official DDD list would be found on the music list page.

I won that argument too, with your help. Once I learned the rules, I citing a couple of videos, John Sebastian and others. Fritz ended up on the all genre list somewhere in the low 80's, which was fine by me. I just wanted him to be recognized.

That was what I was looking for, the all genre lists that used to be on the site. I get the impression that somewhere along the line [[maybe within the past year or so) the forums were wiped and new topics started. Maybe I'd been away too long, but I don't think I like the new form of the site.

Yeah Doug...they did redo the site about a year or two ago and many forum discussions and list construction threads were deleted. I had a whole lot of posts in the bass forum and a couple of others. The traffic there appears to have died off. One reason is that there are really no lists being reconstructed at this time . The bass and guitar forums were lit up for a long time when we were doing the bass list. I still check in there a couple of times a day to see what might be happening, plus Soulful Detroit [[of course) and a couple of others when I have some screwoff time. Talk Bass forum is another good one that I like. The research on DDD is amazing and I could look at those lists and features for hours on end. I've cybermet the webmaster and some of the moderators who put in all that time to focus on all of that stuff, and whether I agree or disagree with a specific preference...those guys are well versed and do their best to be objective. Plus, my preferred genres...R&B, 'oul and Pop are treated quite fairly on the lists and on the forum, although there are a lot of Progressive Rock fans on there who tend to partake in a lot of the discussion...but some of those kids are also quite open to and aware of stuff that I like. The only thing I really avoid is the thrash metal crap. I don't have enough barf bags to listen but even on the lists debates...I'll let others tell me who the best ones are and I'll check em out [[reading...not listening), and try to give them an objective ranking.

Daves point about Isaac and Stevie on the keyboard ranking makes me think of the Nat King Cole syndrome...particularly as relates to Isaac Hayes. Many people outside the mainstream jazz circles have no idea what an accomplished pianist Nat was..one of the very best...but most folks associate him with his brilliant singing...a lot like Isaac Hayes.

Hey Dave...did I ever tell you my Isaac Hayes visit at O'Hare airport in Chicago in the early 70's. I was able to throw out a couple of the right names to where Isaac decided to go out of his way to hang with me for 20-30 minutes. True story LOL.

I can absolutely state that [[at least so far as the Terrana twins and Bruce are concerned) that I would have to be classified as a "little brother", therefore should be associated in the context of "current events" rather than an "archived" individual.

Golfs OK...but down to once or twice a week, with a handicap to prove it [[I'm no sandbagger). Busy with lots of other stuff....PLUS, I've got a porn star neighbor[[and a new set of binoculars).
