In my opinion, the best Soul CDs ever

Dave Godins Deep Soul Treasures, Volumes 1 to 4. [[Kent)

If anyone is unaware of this set of four CDs, I would urge you to obtain them. They are to my mind the greatest compilations of all time, and I don't say that lightly. The late Dave Godin was a real Soul guru to British Soul fans of my generation, he wrote a column in what we considered the Bible, Blues and Soul magazine. His writing was really something else, he was a wordsmith par excellence and his notes on the four CDs illustrate this. I was prompted to write this after listening to the sublime 'Anyone but you' by Barbara West, which despite having heard it many times still moves me so very much [[possibly aided by a couple of large glasses of Scottish Magic Water) I then read Godins notes on this track and they articulate in ways I never could just how good it is. He wrote "Seldom has human heartache been so convincingly and painfully conveyed, made all the more hurting by the reluctant recognition of an element of deceit in a fading relationship. Betrayed trust is indeed a bitter encounter, made even worse when you just can't shake that person from your heart"

This is the track that prompted me to write about these CDs, Barbara West - Anyone but you. Top class Soul.

I have Volumes 1 and 2. The stand out track for me is 'the sweeter he is' by the Soul Children.

I have a collection from Sha-Boom music from 1996. 9 cds with 202 tracks. It's called 'The girl group sound' and has groups I have heard of such as the Blossoms, the Orlons and Reparata & the Delrons to obscure groups like The Cakes, Ginger & the Snaps and Linda Lawrence & the Clusters!!!!! Whether this is the Lynda who was in the Supremes I have no idea.
Long time since I listened to it and no liner notes as it's a burned set. I must give it a hearing again. As I remember it ranges from the sublime to the ridiculous!!

I bought all 4 Volumes when they first came out .. if I had to choose 1 from each I think they'd be ...

Volume 1 .. EDDIE & ERNIE : "Going For Myself"

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XRUEVcxwm4

Volume 2 :- EDDIE HOLMAN - "I'm Not Gonna Give Up"

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h52VtnqAtL0

Volume 3 :- RAY GANT & THE ARABIAN NIGHTS .. "Don't Leave Me Baby"

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_aT53oaZv_8

Volume 4 :- KNIGHT BROTHERS .. "Temptation 'Bout to Get Me"

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVt0Excgd04

There are also lots of other goodies in the series but funnily enough one track that I just don't "get" is the one that DAVE GODIN used to describe as his favourite record of all time "You Got Me" by JAIBI .. which is on Volume 1. I suppose that just illustrates how personal Soul music can be!!

Another pair of CDs worth tracking down, and in a very similar vein and also issued by Kent/Ace are the two volumes featuring songs relating to the Vietnam war ..

    A Soldiers Sad Story

    Hey Roger
When I first heard the Jaibi track I also didn't get it, I thought it sounded like a complete mess. However subsequent plays have made it sound much clearer, and I now love it. So many great tracks over 4 CDs, but I think volume one reaches the absolute pinnacle, and this four CD set also introduced me to tracks that I previously didn't know, and that have subsequently become absolute favorites.

I only saw the list of songs for one of the Vietnam CDs. I hope the 2nd has "Take Good Care" by Tony Mason, and "My Ship Is Coming In" by The Pace Setters. Those are two of the very best.

Kent have done some fantastic work in getting some quality soul music out there.

Two of the most played CD's from their catalogue for me have to be the Eddie And Ernie compilation and the Tommy Tate "I'm Satisfied", compilation of all his KoKo releases and few other bits such as the Nightingales on Stax.

The best outcome is everybody who does not have these 4 cds should buy them - they are priceless!

I also believe someone could pick up Dave's baton and keep this series alive...I first was introduced to Dave in 1966 and am sure he would want to keep exposure of great tunes and great artists to continue.....
