get the first volume of "Forever",the 3 CD set from Hip O Select while you still can; this is going for one hundred dollars and much higher on amazon now, meaning that amazon is sold out and hip-0 must be close to selling out the pressings, I assume...Volume 2 is on the way
The Marvelettes have a lot of great undiscovered gems. One of my favourites is "I'm Gonna Hold On As Long As I Can" with Ann Bogan on lead. Here is a fantastic extended version by one of our very own SDF members [[not sure if I'm allowed to mention him by name or not?), but we all know who he is [[smiles)...

"That's How Heartaches Are Made" originally released on the In Full Bloom album:

The entire Marvelettes pink album is also fantastic. One of the tracks from that album is the Marvelettes' cover of The Velvelettes "He Was Really Saying Something", with Gladys on lead:

"Forever" .... A CLASSIC Motown ballad! Superb!
Hi Redlabs ..
The second volume of the MARVELETTES Hip-O-Select box sets should be released soon, covering the later Motown period, and should include this track from their "Sophisticated Soul" L.P. which became very popular in Britain and even got released as a 7" single back in 1969.
MARVELETTES - "Reaching For Something I Can't Have"

Another track from that L.P. that became popular in Britain was this one ..
MARVELETTES - "Only Your Love Can Save Me"

Locking Up My Heart - an absolute gem and should have been a bigger hit than it was.
Be sure to check out Too Many Fish in the Sea; Danger: Heartbreak Dead Ahead; You're the One; You're My Remedy; Barefootin; Maybe I've Cried My Last Tear
Aside from some of the more familiar songs, there are two songs that I have played to death over the years and never get tired of.
'Because I love Him' [[wonderful piano playing - I wonder who it is?)
'Finders Keepers, Losers Weepers' [[those hypnotic hand claps are irresistible)
The Marvelettes just never made a bad record. I can't wait for November!!
You guys haven't mentioned them but for me the Marvelettes are at their best on Playboy, Hunter, and Don't Mess With Bill; I never get tired of those songs; I realize they are amongst the "hits" but........still very good.
loved HTAT'S HOW HEARTACHES ARE MADE!!! a gem
I agree, should have been a massive hit. Wanda sounds beautiful on that gorgeous Clay McMurray production
by the time that came out, it seemed to me that they weren't even an after thought at Motown, just more product to put on a shelf and eventually write off for tax purposes,,very unfair, I love the entire album "Rainy Mourning" could have been a hit as well...did they even release any of these as singles?

I think internal problems in the group were the cause of their demise..
Rainy Mourning came out as a B side. Marionette was an A side single as was A Breath Taking Guy. I liked Our Lips Just
Seem To Rhyme Everytime.
David/redlabs, this upcoming Marvelettes' albums collection is going to be awesome.
I bought the pink album and "Sophisticated Soul" when they were originally released on vinyl and then on CD. They have always been among my favorite Motown albums, along with "Where Did Our Love Go", "More Hits", "Watchout!", "Ridin' High", "Feelin' Bluesy", "Love Child" and "Right On", to name a few other girl group gems.
"Keep Off, No Trespassing" is a great girl-group Motown thumping track in the vein of "Danger, Heartbreak Dead Ahead". "Destination Anywhere" and "Only Your Love Can Save Me" are wonderful Ashford & Simpson tunes.
It took me a while to appreciate "In Full Bloom". I bought this in the discount bins, along with "Return", in the early 70s. These two albums were among the first albums that I burned onto CDR about 10 years ago.
Since I got my iPod a couple of years ago, I've been playing "In Full Bloom" about once a week. Songs like "Seeing Is Believing", "Sunshine Days", "Too Many Tears, Too Many Times", "Love Silent, Love Deep" and "Truth's Outside My Door" are superb and overlooked.
On "Return" I love "Our Lips Just Seem To Rhyme Every Time"
The songs on "Return" just don't stand the test of time for me. I'm not a fan of covers so I'm not too crazy about most of the other songs on this album. At first I enjoyed The Supremes' covers but that initial enjoyment didn't last too long.
All fans of Motown girl-groups should get this Marvelettes collection. I hope you get it, David.
I don't know who baby bollox is but i do know that i LUV this!
