I wish I had TV One. I will have to wait until the Mary Wells episode surfaces on the internet. It should be a good show. Thanks Roberta!

I hope it answers a question i've had about Mary's My guy album. it seems motown was caught off guard by the record's pop success and quickly threw together an album...one side of which was full of standards. the my v guy album could have been better because mary had a lot of songs in the vaults. but i assume, she wasn't cooperating with motowm.

Are these shows available anywhere online? The web site has very little information and it doesn't look like they're archived anywhere [[official, that is).

Kamasu, Re the Mary Wells album being thrown together quickly. I think it was to the contrary. Given the fact BG was gunning for all his top acts to appear at the top nightclubs in the country - and appeal to a broader, whiter audience, I think those standards were very deliberately planned and calculated for that album. What better way of getting Mary Wells to the Copa than with a number one single across the country being used to promote Mary the torch singer?

    Just my thought.

lakedistrictlad1 is right! Had she stayed she would have beat the Supremes to the Copa and Vegas, I'm sure.

I agree with you. Even the album cover concept and design was much more in an "adult" vein, unlike other Motown albums from that year, much more reminiscent of a Billie Holiday or Sarah Vaughn LP cover from the time period. I mean, compare the cover of "My Guy" to any of Wells' earlier albums, such as "Two Lovers" or "The One Who Really Loves You," though I love those cover designs for very different reasons!
