    MOTD Compact Disc Series

I appreciate that this is a mighty long shot..

is there a list available somewhere of all the Motown CD's issued in the MOTD series that started in 1986 ?

    i see Discogs have a "22" listed.. Marvin's What's Going On MOTD 0022..

    http://www.discogs.com/Marvin-Gaye-W...elease/1851164

are there compact discs for MOTD 0001 to MOTD 0120?

someone once said from #121 the CD's were given the "5" prefix starting with The Commodores Machine Gun - MOTD 5121. this appears to be true, Magnificent 7 appears as MOTD 5123, etc etc

    http://www.discogs.com/Supremes-Four...elease/2541733

i've seen many on eBay over the years.. Stephanie Mills, Al Green, J5, Diana, Commodores.

perhaps we could create a list? anyone else collect early Motown CD pressings?

You might want to look at the Motown album Discography at Both Sides Now Stereo Chat forum. It has a listing of Motown reissues starting in 1981, but I'm not sure if it breaks them down into CD releases. I guess you could tell that by catalog number. But it does list albums and CD releases.

I do wish there was a list! I had a [[quick) look through my MOTD CDs and all are 5xxx, except Diana Ross Greatest Hits - which is MOTD-869

I know that this will not answer all of your question, but the link below will provide a chronology of Motown’s CDs as presented by Sharon Davis in her book, Motown-The History. Pages from the book detailing the cataloging systems used are shown in this link http://www.flickr.com/photos/2460803...7627318336308/ After the image has been selected, right click the photo and choose Large Image for each of the pages and photos.

Bear in mind that CDs did not come into fashion until 1984. Initially, three catalogue series were used. The 6000 Series was started in 1981 and used until 1988. The series consolidated current albums from all the Motown family labels. Some of the current albums began appearing on CD in 1984. A few of the 70s Anthologies and Compact Command Performance collections also received 6000 Series catalogue numbers when issued on CD.

The 8000 Series was used between 1986 and 1987 for the twofer releases.

The 9000 Series was initially used for reissues of the classic 60s and 70s albums as single title releases. The series was used between 1987 and 1988. The album below was a promotional item to advertise the series. There was a booklet that listed all of the 8000 and 9000 series albums. At present it can’t be found.

A more legible copy of the catalogue can be read at the link above.

In 1981 Motown began its vinyl reissue program with the SuperStars Series. They had catalogue numbers 101 through 120. Studio albums used the numbers 121 and up. When the reissues were selected for CD issue between 1988 and 1989, a 5000 Series was started and shared the catalogue numbers of the vinyl reissues. The SuperStars Series CDs became MOTD 5101 through 5120 and the single album reissues used MOTD 5121 through 54xx until the program was discontinued when the company became associated with MCA/Boston Ventures.

Those pages from Motown The History on Flickr are great.

Also, the 37463 series [[is it called that?) replicated the MOTD numbers so that, for example, MOTD5233 would be 3746352332 I think there is an explanation on SDF somewhere.

Discogs is the most amazing site for records and CDs, way above either Amazon or ebay in my opinion..
