Unfortunately, Mikew it is just as bad as the article indicates. I visited the city last September and was awestruck and heartbroken over how badly this city has decaded.
It's worse than Cleveland, it's worse than Vegas, it's worse than parts of my own city, Chicago.

There are small pockets of hope. The area around the new Tiger's stadium is being developed and outside the city's limits there's plenty of money. All it would take to turn Detroit around is for enough people to see the city as a place they want to invest in again.

On the surface Detroit looks bleak but kick the tires and take a look underneath and you may find a different perspective.

Detroit is bad but the potential to do better is there and apparently young people moving in are betting on that potential.

I wouldn’t count out Detroit just yet...."small pockets of hope" is where things start to move forward.... and the same goes for Vegas.

Cleveland? Well I’m probably one of the few people that likes [[downtown) Cleveland [[other than Mark Speck) hahahaha

chidrummer, ms-m, marv2, many thanks for your responses. Well your video certainly presents a more positive outlook than the article I posted, and I'm really glad to see that. I guess at the core of things is the question of meaningful employment for people; no city or country can afford the levels of unemployment we are currently experiencing. The U.S and the U.K definitely need to be addressing this issue in a serious way. Each time a job goes abroad, even if it is 'cheaper' for a company to ship the job overseas, when there are no replacement jobs available, it is a net loss to a country and a blow to the laid off worker and their family.
