while this might be easy for some, it might be tough for others! it doesn't mean it's a terrible track or that you hate it. for instance, most [[if not all) of Right On is considered great. but which is your least favorite?

“WOW”. I consider many of the songs already listed as stunning Ross classics. It’s only during the rca years i can pick songs i actually hate.

Why Do Fools - Endless Love
Silk Electric - Fool For Your Love
    ross 83 - Upfront
Swept Away - We Are The Children
Eaten Alive - Don’t Give Up On Each Other

For the Motown years, it was harder for me to pick a song that I liked least. Some of my choices from those years were just me trying to make a decision. But in the case of albums like SURRENDER, THE BOSS, or RIGHT ON, I really couldn't find a song I didn't like.

I feel the same way, reese. I found it hard to choose a least favorite from albums I actually totally love. For me those albums were More Hits, Diana Ross 1976, Baby It's Me, The Boss. [Note that none of these are from the RCA years or even post-RCA]

keep in mind we're not saying it's a "bad" song or one you hate. but maybe the one with a slightly weaker production. or as with my choice from Surrender of A Simple Thing Like Cry, i selected it because i just find it a little less of a fav in how the chorus is handled. how Diana sings "cry" is totally exposed with little backing track behind her and the nasality of her voice sort of cuts through. i still like the song, but if choosing a track that i might like the least from that album, it would be this one

These are songs that I strongly disliked when released and I made a point of avoiding for years. Most of the time I would skip them and never seek out or add them to playlists. A few have redeemed themselves with alternate versions in the Expanded Editions. I didn't include albums that I have rarely played in recent years [or decades] and so I have forgotten specific songs. In other words some songs left no strong impression one way or another.

    MEET - Never Again
WHERE DID OUR LOVE GO - ASK ANY GIRL
A BIT OF LIVERPOOL - How Do You Do It
    CW&P - Tumbling Tumbleweeds
MORE HITS - ASK ANY GIRL, He Holds His Own
SUPREMES SING HDH - Its the Same Old Song, Love Is Like A Heatwave
GREATEST HITS - ASK ANY GIRL
LET THE SUNSHINE IN - Everyday People, Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In
    TOGETHER - The Weight
CREAM OF THE CROP - Till Johnny Comes, The Beginning Of The End
RIGHT ON - The Loving Country
NEW WAYS - Is There A Place
    TOUCH - Time and Love
FLOY JOY - Precious Little Things
THE SUPREMES - It's All Been Said Before, This Is Why I Believe In You

For me there are no bad tracks on albums such as Diana Ross 70, Surrender, Touch Me, Diana & Marvin, The Boss, diana etc. There are a few Supremes songs i’m not that fond of, but not ones i could say i strongly dislike.
Bad songs a plenty during her rca years, and probably on “I Love You”.

I consider A Simple Thing Like Cry” to be one of Diana’s best vocal performances ever. It’s interesting how we all prefer different things.

I love when she sings the title line and the word "cry". By the end of the song, she's sung herself hoarse and actually sounds like she's crying. Maybe she was.

She totally lives this one. The way she sings the word cry sends chills. Sadly we were to hear less of this style of singing as the years progressed.

I know, sup_fan. This is a great thread! It's always interesting to me to know other peoples' thoughts, likes & dislikes. I love the differences.

I still can't choose from More Hits, Diana Ross 1976, Baby It's Me or The Boss but my least favorite from Diana 1980 is Tenderness. I leave that off my playlists.

The easy cast-offs for me are:
    Meet: Who's Lovin' You
    WDOLG: Run, Run, Run
Bit of Liverpool: How Do You Do It [off-putting vocals]
CW&P: My Heart Can't Take It No More
    Sam Cooke: Shake
Merry Christmas: Joy to the World
IHAS: Lover's Concerto [prefer the Toys version]
A Go Go: Hang On Sloopy
Sing HDH: It's The Same Old Song
    Sing R&H: Blue Moon
Reflections: What The World Needs Now
    Sing Funny Girl: Cornet Man
    Join The Tempts: Sweet Inspiration
Love Child: You've Been So Wonderful to Me
Let The Sunshine In: Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In
    Together: The Weight
Cream of the Crop: Blowin' in the Wind
Right On: I Got Hurt Trying to Be the Only Girl in Your Life
NWBLS: Is There a Place in His Heart for Me
Mag7: Without the One You Love
    Touch: Time & Love
Floy Joy: Now the Bitter, Now the Sweet
    Jimmy Webb: Beyond Myself
Supremes75: Where Is It I Belong
High Energy: Till the Boat Sails Away
MSS: You Are the Heart of Me

    Diana Ross albums:
DR70: Keep an Eye [redundant, prefer the DRATS version]
    EIE: Close to You
Surrender: A Simple Thing Like Cry
    TMIM: We Need You
Diana & Marvin: Don't Knock My Love
    LTISH: You
    Ross78: Together
    WDFFIL: Think I'm In Love
    SE: So Close
    Ross83: Girls
SA: We Are the Children of the World
    EA: Oh Teacher
    RHRB: Shockwaves
    FBTP: Force Behind the Power
    TMH: Don't Stop
    EDIAND: So They Say
    ILY: Take My Breath Away
    Thank You: Let's Do It

[I have no opinion or interest in Dynamite, ReturnMag7]

Both were very hard decisions from strong albums I really liked.

I liked Jean's vocal on I Got Hurt, but the song itself and less polished arrangement made it the weakest track on an otherwise stellar and cohesive debut album for the New Supremes.

We Need You was an even harder decision because the song, the production and Diana's vocal fit the album as well as the others. In the end, I guess I just liked it less than any of the other tracks. [TMIM is just a step below DR76, BIM and The Boss among my favorite DR albums, on par with Diana 1980.]

When I bought More Hits in the summer of 1965 and saw that the first song was "Ask Any Girl" I couldn't believe it. The one song from WDOLG that I disliked was now the lead-off to their new album. I was always thankful that AAG was the last song on WDOLG and didn't break the flow to a much-loved album. I'm so glad it wasn't a single I don't think I could have tolerated hearing it once an hour on the radio.

Thankfully there wasn't a LIVE version on At The Copa! Likewise, imagine if they took the tune and wrote holiday lyrics for Merry Christmas!!! [Think "Little Bright Star" and Tammi's "I Can't Go On Without You".] Perish the thought. And I am thankful that there was never a Supremes/Temptations duet of "Ask Any Girl" and Tony Martin's "Ask Any Man" on Join. Maybe that would have been the straw that broke the camel's back and I would have burned my Supremes Fan Club membership card and tossed my pin.

I don't know why AAG never appealed to me. Until a few months ago when other members on the forum outed themselves and shared their dislike of the song, I thought I was the only one. I know I'm the only one among my close Motown friends. I think it's the slow intro that annoys me. These days I can see the appeal of the song, but I don't need or want to hear it too often.

I'll have to agree about "Ask Any Girl." When I first heard it, the background "oooos" stuck out and they sounded off pitch. In the song and the background vocals defense, there might be some weird frequencies/harmonics that only my ears were picking up.

It's inclusion as the first track on "More Hits" disappointed me because it is so 'blah' compared with the other songs on the album with the exception of "He Holds His Own". As a kid, I didn't understand what the phrase 'holding his own' meant....holding his own what?

Yep pee-yew. I wouldn't even call it singing, more like shrill loud reciting.

    never mind the narrative.

These days I can see the appeal of the song, but I don't need or want to hear it too often.
i don't know that i love the intro to AAG. i'm not sure how i feel about the violin solo. it's just a little odd IMO. but the rest of the song is pretty good

It's inclusion as the first track on "More Hits" disappointed me because it is so 'blah' compared with the other songs on the album with the exception of "He Holds His Own". As a kid, I didn't understand what the phrase 'holding his own' meant....holding his own what?
to be honest, i think if i were to categorize the "second tier" HDH songs from the first tier, it would almost undoubtedly be on the basis of odd lyrics. phrases and bits that just are too clunky. i know they were cramming and trying to make things work. sometimes it turned out ok when they'd make up a word to get a rhyme or concoct an odd phrase to make something work. but others seem to be just awkward.

He Holds His Own makes you have to think a little too much. the listener has to work to figure out what's going on. whereas Back In My Arms Again is a no brainer

Yep pee-yew. I wouldn't even call it singing, more like shrill loud reciting.

    never mind the narrative.
haha i like this one! i think it would have been an amazing video too. i get it that she's yelling a bit more than singing. but it's always been one i've enjoyed and it's often on playlists lol

I always associate you with this song sup. I can’t for the life of me think why you like it but each to his own lol.
Out of curiosity, do you wish she had written and recorded more songs in a similar vein?.

no i don't think this was a "sound" to further explore. it's just very 80s pop. heavy synthesizer, materialistic, superficial. And frankly i don't find it to be totally out of place on Ross 83. i think it blends in a bit more seamlessly that the Parker tracks. Up Front is my least fav of the album.

Alas i’m the opposite as i find the song really jarring. With the exception of the awful “Up Front” i find the remaining Ray Parker songs far more in keeping with the laid back vibe of the album.
