    Gordy European label variation

When Motown's distribution in Europe switched to RCA in the 80's, they started releasing US Gordy releases such as Rick James and DeBarge on a Gordy label as well [[but Tamla releases still came out on "Motown").

However, the name Gordy was spelled "GORD-Y" on the label. Does anyone know why?

Well you learn something every day.

Just had a quick look at the labels for "Don't Look Any Further" by Dennis Edwards. The 7", 12" and album all have GORD-Y on the logo.

Oddly, they also used Gordy on some CDs and the sample I've just looked at it shows GORDY rather than GORD-Y.

That's really odd, Mystery. In my 59 years of collecting Motown, not once have I ever seen nor heard of anyone sticking a hyphen on the Gordy logo -- nor can I imagine why they'd want to. Could you provide a photo?

There was a copyright reason given at the time for why the hyphen had to be included in the logo, but for the life of me I can't remember what it was.

Thanks for the photos, mystery. To quote The Marvelettes' "Seeing Is Believing" -- although I tried Googling it, but came up with nothing. Like 144man said, it must have been for some copyright reason.
