    Mr. Smooth is back

    Hi!

Do you remember Abraham Wilson? Ralph and Russ Terrana co-produced his debut album twelve years ago. Now after a hiatus, he'll soon release a new album and below he tells more about it -

I wish Abe well on his new release. We had a lot of good musical fun getting the first album recorded. Best of luck Smooth with this one.

Coincidentally, I have been featuring some of Smooth's music on the Soulful Detroit forum under Soulful Detroit Center Stage located in the Soulful Detroit Room.

Thanks for sharing this Heikki - and very cool to read that Abraham Wilson is using a full band of live musicians to back him up on the album!

Reading Abe's notes, I notice certain musicians that I know from Monterey. A List all the way. Top notch players. Smooth is playing it smart and I'm looking forward to hearing what he has.

    Well...Where do we begin!

I have been in love with the art of music since I was a pre-teen growing up in Jersey City, New Jersey.

There is something special about the power of good music!

Songs that get my immediate attention are those with great lead vocalist.

I can listen all day to vocal purist like Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Levi Stubbs, Russell Thompkins Jr, Karen Carpenter and Little Jimmy Scott.

When you listen to the best of the best you hear not only with your ears but with your heart!

"RAINBOW EYES" was the 1st new composition on the collection of 13 songs and it was definitely inspired by vocal purist!

Once I figure out how to add music to Soulful Detroit, I would appreciate your opinions.

    Lyric sample :Rainbow Eyes...Rainbow Eyes...
There's no air when you're not there
    Nights are darker too
    Rainy days misty blue
    Oh... How I need you
    Winter, Summer, Spring and Fall
You are more beautiful than them all
Seasons change... Love remains the same
    I'll love you always

    Musicians: Kyle Kovalik... Lead Guitar
    William Spencer...Keyboards
    Jesse De Carlo...Bass Guitar
    Gary Machado... Drums
Abraham... Lead vocal and background vocal
    Richard Bryant... Background vocal

These seasoned musicians were perfect for this POP/Soul composition!

I selected many different musicians throughout the concept because each had an area of specialization in which they excelled.

Next: The title track... "MUSIC IS THE KEY"... Note the Musicians on this track are FUNKY AS 3 DAY OLD collard greens!

Definitely got some funk going on, Smooth. Clever lyrics on top of all that funk.

    Good Day Soulful Detroit!

Sure would do my old heart good to get a review from Roberta, Florence, Drew, Russ, Soul Sister and Mary Brewster on "Music Is The Key"!

Here is the behind the scenes story of that song.

One day I get a knock on my office door and In walks Don Caruth and Anthony [[AC) Cannon. Richard Bryant... Engineer referred them.

Don is left handed but plays a right handed guitar upside down... Hendrix Style!

Anthony is a KILLER Keyboardist with BIG SKILLS and GREAT EARS!
I sang the Melody, lead vocals and delivered the BASS Line.

Bet you didn't know I play Bass!... Still have my Fender Precision [[73)

In one hour they had the foundation of "Music Is The Key"!

Now came the complexity... "Don I need 4 rhythm guitar parts"!

Don gave me a look like I had just "SLAPPED MY MAMA"!

Are You Serious... Yes... Serious as a heart Attack!

The lyrics were very challenging and took 10 rewrites to get correct.

Well... What you hear is MY FUNK BROTHERS... ENJOY!

MAKE MY DAY AND GIVE THE SONG A REVIEW!

    Hey Smooth,

Music is the Key is bumping. Nice groove and clever lyrics. Reminiscence of Tower of Power's Soul With a Capital S. Looking forward to hearing the rest of the cd.

    LOVE WILL FOLLOW YOU:

When you compose a song with your heart rather than with your talent you have "LOVE WILL FOLLOW YOU"

The emotions of the lyrics, vocals and melody are consistent with the love you feel for someone very special!

If you have been blessed with that special someone you will feel this song!

"LOVE WILL FOLLOW YOU" is the only song on the collection that caused tears to flow during the recording.

Smooth, I have listened to the song three times. All in all a pretty good song with [in my opinion only] a couple of minor problems. The opening line is pure dynamite and pulled me in right away. However just after that the lyrics tend to meander a bit and it might have been a good idea to drop a word here and there to keep your performance "smooth".
I also think the guitar solo is a little too busy for the song. The guy is a good player which I appreciate, but his performance steps all over the mood of the song. Personally, I think an acoustic guitar would have worked a little better with the track. Nice background work but maybe gets a little repetitive in places. I'll listen to it a little more and see what pops in my mind. All in all, nice work but you might need a producer on the other side of the glass.

    Good Afternoon Ralph

    Thank you for the review.

I always appreciate an honest opinion from a industry professional.

An artist who cannot take a critique is not a real artist.
