I think it would have been a great concept for a tv series, but agree that Diana would not have been able to commit to something like that.
Of course there was always the mini series route, but that would not have been in keeping with the goal of making Diana a movie star.
Perhaps if the movie was set up in parts.
Mahogany...Tracy's life in Chicago: her job, romances, Brian, fashion school, family issues, being discovered and then having to weigh chasing the dream or sticking with the man she loves or even dealing with the fallout with the family for "running off to God knows what". At the end we see Tracy make this decision by leaving on a plane.
Mahogany II: Tracy In Paris... We see Tracy in the fashion world, early stumbles and hinderances because of her race or her weight, the svengali in her life opening her mind to the biggest possibilities and then orchestrating her path with prices that ultimately end up too high to pay. She becomes the toast of Europe only to find that life at the top aint all it's cracked up to be, especially when the man you love isn't around to share in it.
Mahogany III: Tracy Back At Home.
