I was very pleasantly surprised to know that Gloria Scott has released her second album So Wonderful, a whopping 48 years after her first album What Am I Gonna Do, the second album only to be released on Neil Bogart's Casablanca label. It was famously produced by Barry White. The title track single reached only #74 on the R&B tracks. Her tracks Help Me Get Off This Merry-Go-Round and Too Much Love-Makin' became Northern Soul favourites in the UK. Her second single Just as Long as We're Together [[In My Life There Will Never Be Another) fared much better, reaching #14 on the R&B charts in 1975, but her second album of her 7-year-deal with White was never released as he supposedly found her difficult to work with. While White's career soared, Gloria drifted into obscurity. She would sing backing vocals on Mary Wilson's solo album for Motown in 1979 and tour with her over the next couple of years.
There is little information available of her whereabouts in the 1980s. In the 90s, she lived in Guam and performed in hotels. In 2010 she released a beautiful cover version of Ten City's That's The Way Love Is, including a Tom Moulton mix of it.
The new album contains 10 songs, and I am pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable they are. Her 76-year-old voice is soulful and rich with a lovely husky tone.
There are three remakes of songs from her [[still) unreleased 1975 album - the opening track All Of The Time, You’re On My Mind, the song There's No Cure For Me, a wonderful fingersnapper, written by Scott, White & H.B. Barnum:
and I've Got To Have All Of You, the original 1975 recording of which was released on a Barry White box set some years back.
Highly recommended! Mrs. Scott is going on a UK tour in 2023 where I certainly plan on catching her.
