A half decade ago, legendary singer and songwriter Michael McDonald broke a seventeen year break between albums when he issued the critically acclaimed Wide Open. Since then he’s been busy, touring regularly and guesting on songs by a number of other artists.
But it is a particular treat to see him back out in front with brand new music of his own in the form of today’s release of “Tears To Come,” which we hope will be a preview of more solo work from the 70 year old former [and sometimes current] Doobie Brother.
Written with John Berry, “Tears to Come” is an acoustic guitar-driven ballad that is an interesting mix of folk and singer-songwriter rock, but with a mournfully soulful lead and layered backing vocals by McDonald. In a time when often frenetic, beat-driven music dominates popular music, it is even more impactful hearing a song simply take its time to deliver its melancholy message about the end of relationship.
Check out “Tears to Come” and listen to a master at his craft.
