I like his early releases produced by Dave Hamilton in the late '60s. Very nice Detroit cuts. I don't like his more funky '70s recordings as much.

You can hear three of the tracks on the Ace site - look for the air-waves icon

The project has been a labour of love as O C had a wonderfully powerful voice and along with Dave Hamilton and friend's great songs and productions produced a body of work any singer would have been proud of. There is an article describing the CD on the Ace website, but in a nutshell he came from a big family of gospel singers in Selma, AL and moved to Detroit in his late teens where he hooked up with Dave about 1968 [[some of the tracks he recorded over were probably 1966/67). He eventually moved to New York under the auspices of Jack Taylor where he cut material as Tolbert, having previously recorded an album for him in Detroit as Damn Sam The Miracle Man. We were fortunate enough to contact his widow Velma, who was also a songwriter for some of these tracks, and she filled us in on much of his fascinating musical and personal history.

I've got the CD a week or so and it is fantastic, great soulful and gospel tinged tracks some with strong social messages and statements about what was happening back in the years they were recorded. Shooting High was big record in the UK when played off an acetate over 20 years ago. Other stand out tracks are "All I Want Is You" [[Same as JT Rhythm but more soulful) and the fantastic "Along Came A Woman". It's all good stuff though, it's a must buy IMHO.
