Thats the best recorded version I've heard of that song but the best LIVE version I ever heard is by Vicki Anderson in a nightclub AFTER she & Bobby Byrd left James Brown . Thanks for posting this as I don't think I heard before.
Very enjoyable. I prefer it to Leon Ware/Willie Hutch but I can't say it beats young MJ's version [[in my humble opinion). What I'd love to hear is a version by Marvin where he actually sings the lyrics, as opposed to the vamped versions on I Want You / I Want You Deluxe.
I like Jose Feliciano's version best....clean with no histrionics.
I vote for Melissa Manchester's version. Leon Ware loved it too. So much so he produced Melissa Manhester's follow-up album "Don't Cry Out Loud." The Ware/ Manchester collaboration yielded a fantastic album -- save the dreadful title track which Ware did not produce but of course drippy Clive Davis insisted on including on the album. "We Had This Time" was bumped from the album and became a b-side. Dionne fans will know that song as one of the highlights of the "No Night So Long" LP.
Thelma Houston is reliably soulful but I've heard her much more emotive and convicted. The arrangement of her version is very by-the-numbers.
Oh...I very recently discovered Zulema's recording. I don't know where to rank it yet but it's impressive
