Theodor Heuss' Birthday




Theodor Heuss was a German liberal politician who served as the first President of the Federal Republic of Germany from 1949 to 1959. His cordial nature – something of a contrast to the stern character of chancellor Konrad Adenauer – largely contributed to the stabilization of democracy in West Germany during the Wirtschaftswunder years. Before beginning his career as a politician, Heuss had been a political journalist.

Today’s Doodle celebrates Peruvian photographer Martín Chambi, widely credited as one of Latin America’s first Indigenous photographers and one of the greatest Peruvian photographers of the 20th century. Considered a pioneer of portrait photography, Chambi showcased the intangible essence of Peru’s Andean people, the dramatic landscape they inhabit, and their inimitable culture and heritage.

Martín Jerónimo Chambi Jiménez was born into an Indigenous Quechua family on this day in 1891 in the town of Coaza in the southern Peruvian Andes. He fell in love with photography as a teenager and soon moved to the city of Arequipa to pursue the craft. In 1917, he photographed the newly-discovered citadel of Machu Picchu, and his panoramas helped to ignite the site’s worldwide reputation.

In 1920, Chambi relocated with his family to Cusco [the ancient capital of the Inca empire] and there established a studio where he worked for more than 40 years. From images of cultural festivals in the surrounding mountains to impeccable portraits of Cusco residents from all walks of life, Chambi’s iconic black-and-white photos provided a stunning window into the unique universe of the Peruvian highlands. A true innovator, Chambi is also credited as the first person to publish a photographic postcard in Peru.

Chambi’s photography experienced a surge in international exposure in the late ‘70s, leading to a posthumous solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1979.

La Befana 2009






In Italian folklore, Befana is an old woman who delivers gifts to children throughout Italy on Epiphany Eve [the night of January 5] in a similar way to St. Nicholas or Santa Claus.

A popular belief is that her name derives from the Feast of Epiphany . Epifania is a Latin word with Greek origins meaning "manifestation [of the divinity." Some suggest that Befana is descended from the Sabine/Roman goddess named Strenia.

In popular folklore, Befana visits all the children of Italy on the eve of the Feast of the Epiphany to fill their socks with candy and presents if they are good, or a lump of coal or dark candy if they are bad. In many poorer parts of Italy and in particular rural Sicily, a stick in a stocking was placed instead of coal. Being a good housekeeper, many say she will sweep the floor before she leaves. To some the sweeping meant the sweeping away of the problems of the year. The child's family typically leaves a small glass of wine and a plate with a few morsels of food, often regional or local, for the Befana.

The Elfstedentocht is a long-distance tour skating event on natural ice, almost 200 kilometres [120 mi] long, which is held both as a speed skating competition [with 300 contestants] and a leisure tour [with 16,000 skaters]. It is held in the province of Friesland in the north of the Netherlands, leading past all eleven historical cities of the province. The tour is held at most once a year, only when the natural ice along the entire course is at least 15 centimetres [6 in] thick; sometimes on consecutive years, other times with gaps that may exceed 20 years. When the ice is suitable, the tour is announced and starts within 48 hours.

1000 Years of The Tale of Genji










The Tale of Genji is a classic work of Japanese literature written in the early 11th century by the noblewoman and lady-in-waiting Murasaki Shikibu. The original manuscript, created around the peak of the Heian period, no longer exists. It was made in "concertina" or orihon style: several sheets of paper pasted together and folded alternately in one direction then the other. The work is a unique depiction of the lifestyles of high courtiers during the Heian period. It is written in archaic language and a poetic yet confusing style that make it unreadable to the average Japanese person without dedicated study. It was not until the early 20th century that Genji was translated into modern Japanese by the poet Akiko Yosano.

The Delta Works [Dutch: Deltawerken] is a series of construction projects in the southwest of the Netherlands to protect a large area of land around the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta from the sea. Constructed between 1954 and 1997, the works consist of dams, sluices, locks, dykes, levees, and storm surge barriers located in the provinces of South Holland and Zeeland.

The aim of the dams, sluices, and storm surge barriers was to shorten the Dutch coastline, thus reducing the number of dikes that had to be raised.

Doodle 4 Google 2017 - Malaysia Winner











The winner of the 2017 Doodle 4 Google competition in Malaysia is Kai Wei Ch’ng of Nexus International School in Putrajaya. Kai Wei and numerous contestants from around the country produced amazing works in response to this year’s theme of “Celebrating Malaysia’s Diversity.”

Kai Wei won among the very talented 4 age group finalists with her Doodle “United, We Shine.” She writes:
“In my Doodle, I demonstrated my understanding of Malaysia’s diversity by including people from different ethnicities unique to Malaysia. However, I believe that Malaysia became the vibrant country that it is today because we are united as one regardless of race, color, and ethnicity. To convey my idea, I drew 6 people representing each main ethnicity, with a banner featuring the main colors of the Malaysian flag to show that we are all united [carefully arranged to also represent each letter in the Google logo]."

Philippine Independence Day 2017










The flag of the Philippines is a symbol of national pride, especially today as the country celebrates the anniversary of its sovereignty. In honor of Philippine Independence Day, today’s Doodle is a colorful celebration of both the Philippine flag and the country’s unique island landscapes.

Each component of the flag’s design holds specific meaning. The prominent sunburst has eight rays to represent the eight provinces that began the fight for independence, while the three surrounding stars represent the country’s three island groups: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

With more than 7,000 islands that make up the country, there is no shortage of opportunities to watch the sun rise over the water. The sunrise imagery in the Doodle is meant to capture Filipinos’ optimism in the face of adversity.

In the foreground of today’s Doodle, a group of people gather for a traditional flag-raising ceremony. Accompanied by the Philippine national anthem, these ceremonies are held daily at schools and weekly in government institutions.

Sweden National Day 2017



Today's Doodle celebrates Sweden’s National Day and colorful folk history with a hurrah for the Dalahäst [Dala horse] — the red horse with the flowery harness, known worldwide as a symbol of Sweden.

Originally a simple toy carved by the people of the Dalarna region, the horse was widely sold at village fairs by the 19th century and was even used for bartering. When artisans started to paint the toys, the local Falun copper mines gave the horse its iconic rusty red color. Today, the Dala horse features a harness of white, yellow, blue, and green in the traditional kurbits style — the myth-inspired floral art used in handicrafts from the Dalarna region.

Visitors to Sweden can find the Dalahäst everywhere. It spreads joyful color and pays tribute to the magnificent animals that carried Swedes on their way to building the proud nation they celebrate today.
