How Edwin did it.....
When Motown bought Ric-Tic and released Edwin’s debut album, Soul Master, I was disappointed that “Back Street” from the Ric-Tic inventory wasn't included, and was further disappointed to discover that there must not have been a stereo version of “Agent Double O Soul” available, because the track on the album had been “duophonically rechanneled” [[basically, pulling all the bass out of one side, all the treble out of the other, and sometimes adding reverb). This was a common practice in the earlier days of stereo across the industry, and was just a terrible idea. It would have been better to just use a high-quality mono version. Fortunately, my system had a stereo/mono toggle switch which made listening to duophonic tracks easier on the ears, especially when using headphones. Otherwise, the album was great.

I remember growing up in Toronto and it was the instrumental that was played. It wasn't until many, many years later that I heard Edwin actually sing it.
Such a cool song
Outstanding recording! Undoubtedly some of the Funk Brothers are on that track.
