STEVIE WONDER promotional only 4 CD set - unknown MOTOWN PR-203-2

Just thought I'd send in this little ditty to add a little more "shock value" to the Motown PR series. It's a 4 C.D. promo set with all Stevie Wonder tracks. It came with only a track insert but no pictures. the set carries two sets of numbers on it. The first catalog number is JSA-6253, which would mean that it was designated as a JOBETE publishing number [[like the WRITER series). [[Remember vinyl issues JSA-6251 and JSA-6252 "MILLION PERFORMANCE SONGS [[VOLUME 1 & 2). The second catalog number is shown on one CD as PR-203-2. Released in March, 1987. There are a total of FOUR c.d.'s, each depicting a different era of Stevie's Motown music career. Each has an different screened picture of the artist. See scans. There was a single vinyl album released by Jobete Publishing with the catalog number JSA-6253-1 titled "THE WONDER OF STEVIE" featuring "condensed" tracks which are different to the CD set. The runout area on vinyl disk does NOT list a "PR" catalog number even though it's catalog number coincides with PR-203 CD set. See scans here of front and back cover of this disk. ENJOY!!

Has Stevie Wonder's own version of "Just A Little Misunderstanding" [[BAND 2 -- 1966) been released on any other LP / CD ??

If you're going to release a 4 disc set then do it right.
Where's the outtakes and the unreleased tracks?
    Condensed versions? I'll pass

I would have to assume that "you're" referring to Motown with your comment. You obviously had not thought things through before making your point. The Stevie Wonder "PR" series 4 C.D. set was a promotional only release and was not meant or intended for the general public to purchase. You have to remember that the purpose of this set was to draw public radio station attention to the writing genius of Stevie Wonder, which was the reason why there was a Jobete WRITER SERIES.

Did the bands contain a few seconds of Stevie songs edited together?

Reg describes the single vinyl disc version as having snippets of songs. But from closeup scan of one of the CDs showing its track sequence, it looks like FULL length songs. It looks like this promo CD set came out in 1997, as shown in the scan.

Thank you for explaining that. I shouldn't have rushed through your post. I thought that this was an upcoming set, my apologies. And I'm still hoping for some out of the vault gems

The CD's in this set [[PR-203-2) would have been full versions of tracks as they had the room to do this, whereby the tracks on the single disk vinyl album [[JSA-6253) were "condensed" versions approximatley 30-45 seconds each in length. Even though both carries the catalog number 6253, each is vastly different to the other.
By the way, the vinyl disk version features the Motown "matrix code" in run-out area on disk as YXU. "What is this you may ask"? Well...Motown used this unusual system for cataloging 12" vinyl releases from the late 70's through to 1988. I am the only person to have "broken the code".

I notice there is his version of Tears of a Clown listed too. Has this been released before?

Sorry, can't answer this question with 100% accuracy!!

Isn't everyone muddled up here? This is a set produced from Jobete/Black Bull's point of view - so Stevie is the writer, not necessarily the performer.

The version of Tears of a Clown will be Smokey's.

This was a promotion-only set produced by EMI Music Publishing, which represents the Jobete catalog, to promote the use of Stevie Wonder's compositions in various media. It has never been for sale commercially.

After this thread I found a copy of this on ebay and bought it. Stevie completists might like to know that it has some single edits of tracks which cannot be found otherwise on CD [[I think) either on their original albums or other compiliations [[At The Close of a Century, Definitive Collection, Song Review, Number Ones). The tracks in question are:

Superwoman [[Where Were You When I Needed You)
Don't You Worry Bout A Thing
    Another Star
With Each Beat Of My Heart

What we really need [[Harry if you are there) is a Complete Stevie Wonder albums series that collects all single versions and all instrumentals etc etc.

If you can convince Stevie to let some unreleased material out as well....

The Complete Stevie Wonder albums has already been released, digitally on I-Tunes, and includes the unreleased "Workout Stevie, Workout" album plus numerous promo and rare tracks along with all of his released albums and a digital booklet.

I have both releases - and There is another four cds set done by EMI with the songs stevie composed btw.
There is nothing NEW on them. Tracks are the original versions by stevie, the miracles, Jeff Beck etc... You cant find stevie singing tears of a clown on these promo releases.
You have to Turn to live or tv performances for That.
Nevertheless the "wonder of stevie" set is the best stevie compilation, better than "at the close of a century"
