She was extremely important. She raised the bar for Gordy's operations, both with her musical ability and organisation skills.
I think the problem was that she also wanted to bring ' romance' into the equation.
By her own account, she pressurised him into marriage, which he clearly didn't want, after coming off a strained marriage and divorce only a year before.
He was involved with other women, and must have felt he was forced into it. It clearely strained their relationship.
