David walked or was fired & he quit Motown [[though their booking arm tried to stop him taking any live gigs). He teamed up with the RCA group, the Cavaliers [[who included the brothers of 2 Tempts in their line-up). The new ensemble [[named David Ruffin & the Fellas) started to get some decent bookings [[at chitlin circuit theatres like the Howard in DC & Regal in Chicago).
Motown got scared as the music press were reporting NEXT BIG GROUP - DR & FELLAS. Existing members of Tempts were rumoured to be thinking about quitting & going over to David's outfit. BG / MOTOWN got really scared ... David was in dispute with the record company & their booking arm. He was talking with new record companies about a deal for him & the new guys ... BG got very scared.
NEXT: Motown offered David a solo recording deal if he dumpted the Cavaliers / Fellas and returned to the fold [[must have promised him decent producers / material, etc.)
... David dumps the Fellas and signs a solo deal with Motown
... the world keeps turning ... the Fellas were reported to be signing a deal with a NY label [[can't recall the name at present but I have it somewhere here) ... they never gained a release on the label though as it's finances made it a bit rocky at that time.
