Hmm...my list would be somewhat different.
1.) Going Down For The Third Time [[Huge mistake by Motown not to follow up “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” with this)
2.) He’s All I Got / Everything’s Good About You
3.) He’s My Sunny Boy
4.) I’ll Set You Free
5.) You Gave Me Love
6.) How Long Has That Evening Train Been Gone
7.) Together We Can Make Such Sweet Music
8.) It’s Time To Break Down
9.) Here Comes The Sunrise
10.) You’re What’s Missing In My Life
Duet Recordings
1.) Why [[Must We Fall In Love) [[with the Temptations)
2.) Without The One You Love [[with the Four Tops)
3.) Hello Stranger [[with the Four Tops)
My list:
I’m gonna make it
How Long has that evening train been gone
I’ll set you free
Can’t you see it’s me
Then we can try again
This is the story
The wisdom of time
You’re what’s missing in my life
Don’t let my teardrops bother you
Sweet dream machine
I agree with almost all the video's selections except "I Keep It Hid", "Loving Country" and "Only Time I'm Happy". None of them sound like hits to me.
A few of my own selections that weren't included in the video:
"I'm In Love Again" [[I think this could have been another number one for them)
"Going Down For the Third Time"
"Life Beats"
"Here Comes the Sunrise"
"5:30 Plane"
You bring back memories
Going down for third time
This old heart of mine
Bah bah bah [[though might have needed some fine tuning before release)
How long has that evening train
Why must we fall in love
Loving country
Together we can make such sweet music
Here comes the sunrise
530 train
Trying to be strict here about which had the mark of hits on them, rather than just being great tunes which I love [[Loving Country, Is There A Place, Wisdom of Time for example)...
So I would suggest definitely
1) Bill, When Are You Coming Back?
2) I Had a Dream [[with the Four Tops)
And possibly
3) It's Time to Break Down
4) This Is The Story
Tough one. There are plenty of tracks I love, but I know aren't hit single material.
1. Mother Dear
2. Going Down for the Third Time
3. How Long Has That Evening Train Been Gone
4. Bill, When Are You Coming Back
5. It's Time To Break Down
6. This Is the Story
7. 5:30 Plane
8. Tossin' & Turnin'
9. It's All Been Said Before
10. Bend a Little
I'd add Melodie for the Sups and Four Tops
I was listening to the Reflections lp again and actually paid attention to this song. Is it Mary that's singing along with Diana on the verses, the lower part? I couldn't hear a top harmony so I don't think all three girls are singing the verses. or is it Diana doubles and harmonizing with herself?
Never mind, I just figured out you're talking about "Bah Bah Bah". I never noticed that voice before! I think that's Diana singing with herself. It doesn't have Mary's tone.
My Picks:
1. "Mother Dear [[Version 1)"
2. "Long Gone Lover"
3. "How Long Has That Evening Train Been Gone"
4. "I'm In Love Again"
5. "I'm So Glad [[Heartaches Don't Last Always)"
6. "Don't Let True Love Die"
7. "Any Girl In Love [[Knows What I'm Going Through)"
And these Supremes B-sides would've made great A-sides:
1. "Everything's Good About You"
2. "He's All I Got"
3. "Going Down For The Third Time"
4. "There's No Stopping Us Now"
5. "Happy Is A Bumpy Road"
6. "Ask Any Girl"
I think it could be Mary going a key lower
Both vocals on "Bah Bah Bah" are Diana. The back ups are definitely Mary and Cindy.
I always thought "My Heart Stood Still" should have been released as a single from the Rodgers and Hart album.
For the 70's group, "Sha La Bandit" should have been issued as a single.
Can't help thinking Mary's songs on High Energy [[Don't Let Teardrops, I Don't Wanna Lose You, Til Boat Sails) would have been great quiet storm issues... could have opened the group to a whole new audience...
I agree that they should have gotten something out in 74 with the Ivey and Woodford tracks! 74/75 was a perfect time for pop/disco songs. disco was still relatively new, at least to the general US population. something pop but with a good beat would have been perfect. Frankly I think after the perfect reintroduction of the new Sups with It's All Been Said Before, they should have issued Color My World Blue. it's pop with a bit of light disco.
I like Sha La but again, it's a bit corny lol
Ask Any Girl
He's All I Got
He's My Sunny Boy
Honey Bee
You're What's Missing In My Life
High Inergy
Hello Stranger [[with Four Tops)
Let's Make Love Now [[with Four Tops)
Warm Summer Night [[Mary)
LuvBug [[Susaye)
Not sure who the author of the video is; clearly each of us could make our own Top 10.
Mine would include:
Sunny Boy
Heaven Must Have Sent Yout
Honey Bee
I Wish I Were Your Mirror
Life Beats
It's All Been Said Before
Standing at the Crossroads of Love should've been a single after Lovelight [[they made the mistake of releasing Run Run Run, which I really detest)
Going Down for the Third Time would've been a smash [[probably the originals' grooviest song to date after Hangin' and Itching; I tend to like it when the original Supremes got down and dirty and I always put it in my top five all-time favorite Supremes records ever)
Ask Any Girl
He's All I Got
Whisper You Love Me Boy [[I prefer their version over Wells')
Mother Dear [[I don't care what some are saying, I felt it had potential to be, if not #1, at least top 10)
I'll Set You Free [[Diana doing the type of vocal little MJ would emulate a year or two later; Mary and Cindy killing it in the background and I love Diana's sass at her ex...)
Long Gone Lover [[that could've easily been released before or after Lovelight; I love all three Supremes on it; especially Flo's soprano at the end and Mary's intro with the other girls coming in. )
It's Time to Break Down
5:30 Plane
