Sugar Pie DeSanto - Slip-In Mules

I've only recently begun to explore the work of Sugar Pie DeSanto. One thing that leapt out at me when I youtubed "Slip-In Mules" is that the mono version has a completely different vocal to that which is used on the stereo mix. I presume the video below features the original hit version - can anyone here [[dis)confirm if that's the case? Has the version in the video ever been released on CD? The stereo version is on DeSanto's Chess/MCA compilation from the late 1980s and it's also on Ace's "Go Go Power" Singles compilation from 2009.

There's a new digital download compilation from Geffen/Universal. They appear to have narrowed the stereo mix from the MCA/Ace CDs, but it's still clearly the stereo take rather than the one above.

I have a CD of her hits that I got at least 20 yrs ago so I only know I have the 45 released version of "Slip In Mules". The first 45 I ever bought by her was "Soulful Dress" in about '64. Love all her stuff. She is a GREAT UNSUNG talent for sure.

Do you mean you have the 45 vinyl record of "Slip In Mules"? I ask because the Chess/MCA CD comp from the late 1980s has the alternate/stereo take of "Slip-In Mules". I believe the set was reissued in the late 1990s in remastered form, but I'd be surprised if they bumped the stereo version for the original mono take on the remaster. The fact that Ace used the stereo version as well makes me skeptical that the original vocal has ever been reissued in the CD era.

Can you check your CD to confirm whether or not it's the version in the video?

at the time I think "Slip In Mules" was kinda an answer record to Tommy Tuckers Hi-Heel Sneakers.

Yes, it is. The full title of the DeSanto record is "Slip-In Mules [[No High Heel Sneakers)". In the mono take above, the "No High Heel Sneakers" of the song title is directly quoted at about the 50 second mark as part of the lyric "Can't wear no high heel sneakers...". In the stereo take, Sugar Pie sings "Can't wear my high heel sneakers".

Thanks for checking. However, I have the same collection and "Slip-In Mules" is most certainly the stereo take, not the 45 take posted above. The "Down In the Basement" liner notes also state that "Mama Didn't Raise No Fools" was previously unreleased, yet 45cat has a March 1965 release date for a song of that title.

    http://www.45cat.com/record/nc429279us

Further, the same liner notes also credit Sugar Pie DeSanto as the songwriter for "She's Got Everything", when it's clearly the same Jimmy Radcliffe/Oramay Diamond song that gave The Essex a #56 Pop hit.

The Ace "Go Go Power" CD also lists the Cat number for the 45 of "Slip-In Mules", though it's the stereo take that's actually on the CD, same as "Down In the Basement".

sorry, they fooled me cause I thought it was the same as I heard on the radio in '64. The only actual 45 I had was "Soulful Dress" & "In the Basement" I will have to dig through my 45 boxes & see if they sound the same.May take awhile.
