One Step Closer - The Doobie Brothers

At this point I know virtually nothing about The Doobies but I DO know that this song is absolutely brilliant, and that I would like to share it with you wonderful people of Soulful Detroit

Thanks for sharing Tom. The Doobie Brothers' "One Step Closer" is 'blue-eyed soul' at it's best [[and it's one of the last of the band's 'blue-eyed soul' songs-the group would disband shortly after this album and reform in 1989).

If you like this song I would recommend "Takin It To The Streets" and "What A Fool Believes". The Doobies do have two different musical styles as they started off southern rockers and then changed with Michael McDonald to the sound of the clip you provided. They since gone back to their original style as Michael McDonald has been solo since the 80's.

Yesss, I agree Eddie, wonderful blue-eyed soul indeed. The song kinda has an Average White Band-style groove. Mmmmmmm

Hey Luciano, I managed to download those albums too. Haven’t given them a proper listen as yet. And it’s interesting that the group have a kinda “dual genre” thing going on

Hey jack, I’ve read about those albums previously but that was before I even knew who Michael McDonald was! I’m still learning

Also, did you buy either of the albums, and what did you think of them?

Hey Tom, I am usually not a great fan of cover albums, but I am fan of Michael [[even got his last album on vinyl).
Motown was good but Motown 2 I only played once.

The Doobie Bros. also did a good remake of Kim Weston's "Take Me In Your Arms [[Rock Me)" in 1975 [[before Michael McDonald joined the group a year later).

A great song for sure. If you are of the Blue eyed soul persuasion then there is much to enjoy with the Michael Mcdonald years. Too many great songs to mention but What a Fool believes, minute by minute, real love and it keeps you running are particular favourites of mine. Most of Michaels' solo stuff is well worth checking out including his Holiday album [[a real gem). Also check out the rare but wonderful duet with the late great Nicolette Larson on "let me go love". True soul perfection.
