As with American pie, I remember reading about it whilst delivering newspapers..
"Bad news on the doorstep"..
I was too young to appreciate what was going on at the time, but we certainly lost a major talent that day. I have spoken with friends who met Otis and nearly all of them had nothing but positive things to say about him as a person. His brief but magnificent contribution to music will continue to be enjoyed by future generations.
Please see the "Unsung" on the Bar-Kays. Trumpeter Ben Cauley, a member of the Bar-Kays speaks & his recollection of the accident is heart wrenching and will bring tears to your eyes.
so many "what ifs" if Otis had lived.I was 16 in high school & Otis was part of my BIG THREE, James Brown, Wilson Pickett & Otis Redding.
They don't even mention that the band was the Bar-Kays. They'd already had some success in their own right at that time, including their hit "Soul Finger," I believe. I also thought that more than 1 member of the band survived, but I might be wrong on that
It's amazing what passes for journalism these days...!

Here is the infamous photo that appeared in Jet Magazine's story about the crash. Viewer discretion is advised. Please do not click the link if you are sensitive to accident scene photos:

[ATTACH]This is the exact table where Otis supposedly wrote his swansong final hit shortly before his death...[[Sittin On The) Dock of The Bay at a houseboat harbor I visited in Sausalito, Ca. I was directed to a boat owned by Mr Stewart Brand [[Whole Earth Catalogue) who purchased the table years ago and is supposedly his proudest possession. I took the picture through the door to the boat, and later communicated with Mr Brand who confirmed that was the table in question...

I remember the Jet Magazine photos and story. I showed them to my great-granddaughter and my wife's great niece a couple of years ago after showing them the Monterey Pop video of Otis doing "Shake." They liked the part where he sang the "early in the morning etc. part. We'll never know how his career [[and Sam Cook's) would have turned out but I'm sure it pointed toward growth and success for sure.

Dag,i was thinking about otis death today, what a great soulman he was,and yes he would've been a major player today either still recording or producing.
