    Motown 1150 - Supremes & Temptations Release

In August of 1969, the Supremes and Temptations released MT 1150, Stubborn Kind of Fellow b/w Try It Baby.

For some strange reason I have been unable to locate a copy of this single to add to my collection. It never appears on eBay or other listings that I sometimes come across.

Does anyone know why this specific record is so scarce and difficult to find? Any distribution problems?

    Thank you.

wasn't it only issued a release number and then cancelled? with the end of the year approaching and Diana's planned departure perhaps they thought this one would oversaturate and crowd the market.

Wow, this does seem pretty rare. I couldn’t even find it on Discogs! Maybe as gman says it was cancelled. It is however on The Complete Motown Singles: 1969 though.

    It's listed here:
    https://rateyourmusic.com/list/paddl...discography/2/

but there is no label scan. I agree that it looks like it was given a release number but not actually released.

It's not listed in the discography in the Emperors of Soul booklet either.

According to the notes in TCMS9 the single was scheduled but cancelled so was never released. You are not going to find a copy.

it was scheduled but cancelled - wisely - as it was deemed to be not hit material. While The Weight was a better choice, IMHO, the only hit on the album was Why [[Must We Fall In Love) - and even that wasn’t a slam dunk. It amazes me that with the vocal talent of those two groups that there isn’t even a half dozen tracks I can play religiously.

I loved Diana’s voice on Try it Baby and Why Must We Fall in Love. Pop brilliance at its most brilliant.

Agreed - especially on WMWFIL. Also, her vocal on The Weight is perfect - all three are perfect on that track.

What about I’ll Be Doggone? I thought that was the best song on there

I happen to like Sing A Simple Song...I tend to like a lot of Sly's stuff.
"Together" for the most part doesn't even come close to "Join"...the only cut on Join I bypass is "Impossible Dream"...because the TCB version blows the studio LP one away.

They forgot to issue 1150 in their rush to get out "The Luney Landing"

Thanks to all who responded. Obviously I was looking for a "Needle in a Haystack" that apparently did not exist. Thanks everyone.

"The Weight" was a horrible choice. If I had to rank the Supremes' singles from best to worst, I can't think of any single released from 1961-1977 that is this bad. And by "bad" I mean there should have been no surprise that people weren't running out to pick this cut up.

That’s what I think. I believe it might say in The Complete Motown Singles that this was released in stereo and they wondered if it was a test to see how that went

There wasn’t much else to redeem it

Speaking of "Why Must We Fall in Love," many of us will remember a discussion of this forum of how this track on the actual album contained a lot of distortion which was apparently cleaned up for the cd version. It's such a wonderfully written song, both lyrically and musically, and is one of my favorites from the Supremes/Temptations recordings.

"The Weight" actually grew on me and I like it...It's a different and blacker sound for DR...I don't think it was a smarter choice than "Why?" as a single...the above 2, Sing A Simple Song and Can't
Take My Eye's are the only tracks I find enjoyable here. "Composer" still gets my vote for worst single.

As a young teenager in 1970-71, I was well used to the black Tamla Motown label records as I'd not long started collecting records and due to my tastes I found that most of what I bought was on that same label. For example, I bought HMHSY by The Elgins without knowing it was on Tamla Motown [[or that it was a re-release).

I was absolutely shocked to see the different coloured Motown labels in the window of a Blackpool record store. My first experience lol. With limited funds I still had to have one, but what to choose - there were so many and on the different US labels too.

What did I choose? It was DRATS n' Tempts on "I'll Try Something New" c/w "The Way You Do The Things You Do" - my first Motown label record. I still think that's quite a magical song.

They were great times. There were lots of record shops then and some specialised in still new but old stock albums so it was common to see some of the now quite rare Tamla Motown LPs here. LPs like "Watch Out", "Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers", "Soul Sounds", "Country, Western & Pop" etc [[but there were still some that never materialised for me back then). On that same Blackpool trip I had picked up "Motown Memories" on TML11064 as still new. Happy memories.
