    The Marvelettes: Ballads

While The Marvelettes most often recorded "fingersnapping" tracks, cha chas, etc., they also did some terrific ballads on occasion over their career. I am planning to make a play list of their pure ballads. Can you fans help me create that list?

    1. "When You're Young and In Love"
    2. "Now Is the Time For Love"
    3. "Message to Michael"
    4. "This Night Was Made For Love"
    5. "Queen of the Fools"
    6. "Why Must You Go"

Forever- i see already mentioned OOOPS although not one of my faves,i mentioned it because it is a ballad. The remixed duet with Marvin breathes new life into this song i think.

All four of those songs are great picks for classic ballads by The Marvelettes. Another one I've got to add to my list is "Little Girl Blue [[He Won't Be True)". Cheers, Honest Man.

I couldn't agree more, but I'd have to add 'Marionette' to complete my top 3.

I haven't heard the remixed duet. Is it a fan mash-up? How can I hear it?

A lot of the songs mentioned I would certainly not call ballads! The Stranger, Truth's Outside My Door & Destination: Anywhere.

    Here are some real ballads

    So Long Baby
    Whisper
    Oh I Apologise
    Love Letters
I Think I Can Change You
    You Should Know
    Strange I Know
    Why Must You Go
    Little Girls Grow Up
Maybe I Dried My Tears For The Last Time
    I Know Better
    Message To Michael
When You're Young And In Love
    When I Need You
    Tonight Was Made For Love
    Here I Am Baby
Don't Make Hurting Me A Habit
    Someway, Somehow
    That's How Heartaches Are Made
I Have Someone [[Who Loves Me Too)
    Rainy Mourning
    So I Can Love You
    Marionette
    No More Tearstained Make Up
    After All
    Take Me Where You Go
    One Kiss Led To Another

Now even some of these are pushing the boundaries a bit. The Marvelettes were not really big on ballads!

one of the BEST ballads would be "No Time For Tears".

Agreed, I forgot about that one. I also forgot about A Need For Love!

This brings up just what is the definition of a ballad. I never ran across an explanation and never bothered to look but do know one when I hear it. Examples:

Lost And Turned Out - The Whispers
Your Still A Young Man - Tower of Power
I Want To Know Your Name - The Intruders
Early Morning Love - Lou Rawls

Looks like ballads are slower tunes for sure. Also, for some reason I can recognize a ballad by black artist but not other ethnic artist unless the song is titled "The Ballad of" so and so. A good example of that is The Ballad of Davy Crockett which is a story. But even that doesn't clearly define a ballad as it relates to soul/R&B music.

    noun: ballad; plural noun: ballads
a poem or song narrating a story in short stanzas. Traditional ballads are typically of unknown authorship, having been passed on orally from one generation to the next as part of the folk culture.

a slow sentimental or romantic song.

"The Ballad of Davy Crockett" would certainly befit the first definition. "Forever" would fit the second. I always consider slow songs to be ballads. Anything mid tempo or higher is out of the running.

I always found it interesting that on Baby Washington's original version of the song, the 2nd and 3rd verses [[as sung by Wanda) are reversed. I think the verses flow better, and make much more sense as far as the story arc, in the order Wanda sings them.
