Motown's Year Without Any Number One Soul Songs

without looking it up !!!! Challenge yourself!

What entire year passed without a single Motown record placing a #1 spot on Billboard's weekly Soul/R&B/Black Singles chart?
If I'm not mistaken , it only happened once during 1961 thru 1988 -
and no I don't mean the year 1964 when Billboard didn't tabulate any charts, excluding that year.

What year was it ? Any takers?

And it's a good guess! Wrong! But a good guess!
1979 almost squeaked by without Motown scoring , but then they landed a number one for a week on November 24th.

    The Commodores: STILL

Stevie had 2 number ones in 1987 with "Skeletons" and "You Will Know".

The Commodores had a number one with "Slippery When Wet" in 1975.

We just mentioned this on a recent thread because we were talking how a particular song didn't chart #1 on the r&b charts but it did on the top 40 charts. 1972 is the answer

I'm curious, how many people on Earth would know the answer to this without looking it up?

The first half of 1975 was good for Motown when it came to chart toppers:

    HAPPY PEOPLE ---The Temptations
    SHOESHINE BOY --- Eddie Kendricks
    SHAKEY GROUND --- The Temptations
BABY THAT'S BACKATCHA --- Smokey Robinson
    SLIPPERY WHEN WET --- Commodores

then after July 5th, no more
