I know several groups both in and out of Motown should be thanking Gladys and the Marvelettes for paving the way for them all. Especially ONE girl group from Detroit's Brewster Projects!!!
And the fact they STILL ain't in the Hall of Fame is a real insult. They, along with the Shirelles and Chantels, were pioneers in what we know as the girl group sound and the Marvelettes earn more points for being one of the first soul groups and also the group that was part of what became "The Sound of Young America".
At 15, 16 years old, Gladys had a voice that sounded MUCH older. And she was so soulful.
