I feel ashamed to admit it, but I just don't know anything about The Dells, or their music. I must check them out.

Do you know much about these albums, PNH? What are they like?

They may not have had much success in the UK. The Dells, I believe, outpaced the Four Tops as longest-running group with no member changes. The Dells' sound was known by its traded lead vocals. It's my opinion that the Chess-Cadet years were their best, particularly those albums produced by Charles Stepney. 'Give Your Baby' is a 70's release featuring the big hit single of the same name, and 'Like It Is' is a [[I think) '69 release. I did not have my own copy of 'Give Your Baby' on lp but borrowed & taped a friends' copy; it will be wonderful to listen to it again. And 'Like It Is' will be a new discovery. After many years in limbo it's great that the Dells lps from the Chess-Cadet years are finally being released on CD! Usually Dells lps featured a mix of new material written for them and some covers, always with Stepney's extraordinary orchestral arrangements and out-front singing by the group.

I advise everyone against supporting pirated music by boycotting yet another bootleg from this garbage label.

I just today received an email just today from two songwriters who have been ripped off by unpaid and unauthorized use of their songs on another one of this label's releases.

It would be if they were legal.

Hey, PNH, thanks for the reply.

I just checked and it seems The Dells were something of a "one-hit wonder" here in the UK, having had one just Top 20 hit with a medley of "I Can Sing A Rainbow" and "Love Is Blue".

Oh, wow, outlasting The Four Tops, that really is something! And trading lead vocals, I love it when groups do that, lol

I have read about "Give Your Baby A Standing Ovation" before [[was it written by Marv Johnson?) but never listened to it. I shall do!

Whilst not having UK chart success, the Dells are very popular amongst Northern Soul and 60s Soul collectors.
Popular Dells tracks played at Northern Soul venues over the years include:

    Wear it on our face
    Show Me
    Run for cover
    There is
    Thinkin' 'bout you
And the much loved " Make sure [[ you have someone who loves you"
70s tune " Your Song" was big too....

My personal favourite is " I can't do enough".

Let me know their names and addresses. I'll send them both the dollar they'd make from royalties on 'legal' releases!

Don't know a lot about Playback Records is a specialist reissue label based in Australia, and not related to the old label using the same name, this Dells CD is being stocked by many USA top sellers, not just Dusty Grove.

They claim they pride ourselves in issuing esoteric albums or compilations that are too niche-interest for other labels to bother with, and claim 'unlike our mysterious namesake, we only issue legitimately licensed titles'

No one likes to see artists not get their dues.

Agreed. But ... having just passed the 35th anniversary of the introduction of CDs, how much longer can fans be expected to wait for much-loved reissues? Another 35 years and I'll be LONG dead.

O, ye of little faith! Olivia de Havilland and Kirk Douglas would call you a wuss!

'legal' - implying that it's perfectly ok/legal to use someone else's intellectual property for commercial gain?

Sure, they likely would have made less than $50 had they been paid for a legitimate release - but that's not the point. If I'm a songwriter, I expect to be paid for the use of my songs.

The label that's releasing the Dells CDs is a US label run out of California. But they pretend to from Poland to avoid legal repercussions from their blatant copyright theft. Shameful.

Fact: when you support the bootleg CD market, it means that legitimate reissue labels won't touch these titles. So you won't get them in Master Tape sound quality, you won't get unreleased outtakes, and the Artist and songwriters won't see a dime of their $50 due in royalties.

I bedded both of them. Olivia tipped better; Kirk wanted to do really weird things with his chin cleft. One moves on.

I'll admit I didn't read your entire post. I know you mean well, but honestly, blah-blah-blah. What's 'shameful' is the fact that record companies sit on this material for decades while the fans and artists die off one by one. If there were an 'official' release, I'd buy it. There isn't. And at this point most likely never will be. Get an official release - released - and I promise I'll buy it. Those who should get royalties will not get any less royalties from a grey-market release than from no release.

It is on sale in Amazon, CD Universe, Noble & Barnes if a small time label is managing to get them in these stores they have done well. I stated clearly that I do not agree with artists be it writers, singers or musicians not getting their dues, but some major record companies did not always pay full dues as well..

I have to agree all around, and though it can be considered a false equivalent you make an important point about the major labels. Deep Discount is also carrying the releases. Rather than try to shut them down why not work towards getting these labels to pay royalties?

I ordered both here in the USA. Can't wait to get my copies! We'll hope for good quality. I'm glad to see that sales are good. So much for whatever conglomeration owns the Chess archives and has ignored this material for 35 years!!

They should be shut down, because what they're doing is illegal.
And clearly they have no intention of paying anyone for anything, but appear to be happy to sit back and wallow in their greed like a pig in proverbial, as they watch the money that should be going to other people roll in.

Hope in vain then, because they're needledrops.

And if you're using "The labels that own the stuff aren't releasing them", how do you excuse this label releasing material that HAS been legitimately issued on CD before?

As for "I'm glad to see sales are good", you sound very invested in this.... do you know the bootlegger behind the label personally or something?

I note that the same label that issued 'Sweet As Funk Can Be' is releasing these two titles. SAFCB sounds great so I think we have something good to look forward to! Hoping to receive my copies any day now -

I received my copies of 'Give Your Baby...' and 'Like It Is ...' yesterday! I'm so happy to finally have these superb recordings on CD. I listened to "Give Your Baby...' last night and it sounds great. I'll give 'Like ...' a listen tonight. Can 'Musical Menu' be next!?

At last my copy of /Give Your Baby a Stranding Ovation' by The Amazing Dells just arrived, superb quality!

Many UK sellers have it for around £11.50, not sure why Amazon UK have it at £18.86 plus delivery even sellers on the site have it as low as £11.52

As I previously said anyone involved in music should get their due rights for copyright, but the wide distribution this release has received if it is a bootleg? and I am not convinced they have done so well.

Glad you are as happy with the quality as I am. What a superb lp GYBASO is! Better than I remember. Most of the original material is single-worthy. SOOO happy to have this in my collection. Regarding 'bootleg' status I assume it's a 'grey market' production. Until whomsoever owns the Chess/Cadet label gets The Dells catalog back into print I'll happily buy whatever is available.
